Melania Trump visits Malawi school on solo Africa tour

She opened the Kenya portion of her visit earlier Friday by feeding baby elephants at Nairobi National Park and going on a safari.

Smiling for the cameras in the shadow of the pyramids, First Lady Melania Trump wrapped up her four nation Africa tour in Egypt on Saturday, far from the political tumult back home.

She also plans to visit the Statehouse to meet over tea with Malawi's first lady, Gertrude Mutharika.

As the first lady sat alone in her vehicle, peering through binoculars and shooting photos of zebras, giraffes and impalas on her iPhone, critics were parsing her decision to wear the attention-grabbing white hat.

The protestors who lined up on the M1 road near police headquarters at Area 30 carried hoisted placards which had messages critical on the impact of the United States president Donald Trump's decision to cut health care funding to Africa in general and Malawi in particular.

"Meeting those children and understanding their different way of life is why I wanted to travel here", she said.

The First Lady's visit to Kenya follows a discussion she held with Mrs Kenyatta at White House when the Kenyan First Lady accompanied President Uhuru Kenyatta on a visit to Washington DC in August this year.

The first lady's visit to Nairobi National Park led to the first security panic of the solo trip when a boisterous elephant almost knocked her over, prompting a Secret Service agent to rush forward and grab her.

U.S. President Donald Trump has not visited Africa since taking office in 2017.

According to an AP report, the first lady was "joyously welcomed at the airport" by a troupe of women singing and dancing, but "a few signs of protest were afoot, too, as President Trump is not widely seen as a friend of Africa". The trip is also created to promote global assistance from the U.S. Agency for worldwide Development (USAID), but President Trump has proposed cutting its budget by 30 percent the past two years. She also read them a book.

"I wanted to be here to see the successful programmes that (the) United States is providing the children and thank you for everything you've done", the U.S. first lady said at the book donation ceremony, held inside the school's library.

Melania's focus on wildlife stands in contrast to efforts by her husband to lift a ban on some elephant trophy imports, which created a public outcry previous year.

The first lady was greeted by students with a song, Fox News reported: "We are happy today to see you". First Lady Margaret Kenyatta will also be in attendance.
