The president of Interpol has reportedly vanished after going to China

His wife said she hadn't heard from him since he travelled to China on September 29, Reuters reported.

Prior to that, Interpol said that to understand the disappearance of Humvee needs of the law enforcement bodies of China and France. She contacted the police on Friday. But because Interpol's secretary-general is responsible for the day-to-day running of the police agency's operations, Meng's absence may have little operational effect.

Meng was elected president of Interpol in November 2016. He is a veteran of China's police and security systems, serving as the country's vice minister of public security and the head of the country's Interpol bureau.

Since Meng continued to hold positions in the security establishment concurrently with his role as Interpol president, that may have placed him under additional pressure.

The French official said Mr Meng did arrive in China.

At the time, human rights organizations such as Amnesty International expressed concerns that Beijing could use Interpol to arrest dissidents and refugees overseas.

Meng is a senior Communist Party official in China.

The newspaper said that upon landing a week ago, Meng was "taken away" for questioning by what it said were "discipline authorities".

Interpol is the world's largest agency facilitating police cooperation with 192 member countries. Rights groups expressed concern at the time that Beijing might try to use Meng's position at the body to go after dissidents overseas. His term in Lyon runs until 2020.

China, in the midst of a weeklong holiday, offered no comment on the disappearance of Meng.

Even though France has launched a probe into his disappearance; the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post quoted a source that Meng is under investigation in China.

Critics suggested that Meng's election gave Beijing a chance to enlist more global help in tracking down alleged economic criminals, including corrupt officials, targeted by President Xi Jinping's anti-graft campaign.
