Google to shut down Google

A Google spokesperson cited "significant challenges in creating and maintaining a successful Google+ that meets consumers" expectations" along with "very low usage' as the reasons for the move.

Alphabet Inc shares fell 1 per cent to $1,157.06, after earlier dropping to $1,135.40, the lowest intraday price since July 5. This leaked data included full names, email addresses, birth dates, gender, profile photos, places lived, occupation and relationship status.

Today, Google posted information about Project Strobe on their blog. (There are some exceptions-e.g., voicemail and backup apps.) Developers can find more details in the Google Play Developer Policy Center and in the Help Center.

Google says it hasn't found any evidence that developers were aware of the bug, so it's unlikely that anyone abused it.

The issue has been fixed and company found no evidence the information was misused by any developers, he said.

Although the bug was discovered many months ago, Google didn't disclose it right away.

A bug in Google+ exposed the personal data of almost 500,000 people and Google chose not to disclose it out of fears of regulatory pressure.

Google is pulling the plug on its flagship social network Google+ after data from up to 500,000 users was left exposed by a bug. If this were a bug in Facebook discovered by Project Zero, it would have been documented by the team in public for all to see - yet Google kept a lid on its own cockup.

"In the interim, since we can not trust that we know much or even most of what ought to concern the public, the FTC should install public-minded privacy monitors into the firms as an element of accountability".

Google's failed attempt at a social media platform, Google+, will soon be coming to an end.

It also announced other security features.

Users can grant access to their Profile data, and the public Profile information of their friends, to Google+ apps, via the API. "By giving developers more explicit rules of the road, and helping users control your data, we can ensure that we keep doing just that", reads the blog. Users have to provide "explicit permission" in order for them to gain access to it.

Finally, app access to Call Logs and SMS on Android are going to be limited moving forward. They'll further limit these permissions by removing contact interaction data for the Android Contacts API.

Gmail add-ons available to consumers starting next year will be barred from selling user data and be subject to a third-party security assessment that will cost them about $15,000 to $75,000, Google said.

Only email clients, email backup services and productivity services will be able to access this data.

Google has recently been at the center of a number of privacy breaches.

Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai knew of the glitch and the decision not to publicly disclose it, the WSJ reported.
