Cyclone Titli: Schools, colleges to remain closed on Oct 11 & 12

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that a heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places, and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places, is very likely in Odisha in the next 24 hours.

According to officials who are monitoring the cyclone from the coastal Doppler weather radars at Visakhapatnam, Gopalpur and Paradip, the cyclone is very likely to move north-westwards during the next 12 hours and then re-curve north-eastwards towards Gangetic West Bengal across Odisha.

"The centre of the eye of the cyclone that lies over land moved toward Gopalpur in Odisha after hitting the coast in Andhra Pradesh".

Gopalpur: Cyclone Titli made its landfall on Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast early this morning, bringing with it heavy rain and winds gusting at 140-150 kmph.

The cyclone wreaked havoc in Ganjam and Gajapati districts of Odisha, but the evacuation of about 3 lakh people ensured there were no fatalities.

"The process of landfall has started and it will completely cross the Odisha coast in one or two hours".

Districts like Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Khurda, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak and Balasore are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall till Thursday, the IMD said.

Some districts of Odisha have experienced rainfall over 100mm.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday reviewed the cyclone situation.

The students' union poll across the state scheduled for October 11 has been cancelled, Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi said.
