Malicious Message Bug Is Crashing PlayStation 4, How To Protect Your Console

This weekend, reports emerged that a similar bug has affected PlayStation 4 consoles on the PlayStation Network. After opening it, the player's PS4 locked up along with most of his teammates'. The bug, in some instances, has been used during matches to cause the opposing team to crash and be unable to complete a match.

The offending messages apparently have the word "Juegas" and a odd symbol that can't be recognized by the PS4. One of the team members, though, did not face the problem, as their message settings were toggled to "Private" mode. You can do that by going to Account Management in your console Settings, heading to the Privacy Settings submenu, and changing Messaging settings to "Friends Only" or "No One", meaning that only your pre-selected friends or no one at all can message you.

Unfortunately, as of now, there doesn't seem to be a solution beyond prevention. Some users are claiming that deleting said message through the PlayStation mobile app fixes the issue, but others suggest that it doesn't always work.

According to user BorgDrone, basically, someone can "brick" another's PS4 just by using "a message created to exploit a mistake in the code".

So if your messaging settings currently allow you to receive messages from strangers, you may want to change them for now.

If you've received a malicious message with three heart emojis followed by a question mark box symbol, chances are your PS4 has frozen up and either needed a factory reset or a database rebuild to correct it. A system bricking would apply that a factory reset wouldn't fix it, and that it would need to be sent to Sony.
