Storm Callum brings high winds and choppy seas but warnings downgraded

Heavy rain is expected in parts of Scotland with warnings that flooding could pose a danger to life.

The Met Office issued an amber warning across much of south Wales, advising residents to expect torrential rain and widespread disruption to travel from Friday morning until Saturday evening.

Flood defenses in Carmarthen were breached for the first time since their construction 30 years ago after the River Towy burst its banks, flooding homes and cutting off power for some 2,000 homes and businesses.

Motorists were also warned over tricky driving conditions brought by Callum, with several roads and highways in Cumbria impassable owing to floodwater.

Storm Callum came and, as of Friday afternoon/evening, will have left without too much bother.

A spokesman for the airport said five departure flights and five arrivals were cancelled as a result of the gale force winds.

The warning comes into affect from 5am on Friday lasting throughout the day until 9pm.

Traffic Scotland said the Forth Road Bridge had been closed in both directions at about 9am, and tweeted it would be re-opened in 15 minutes.

"Those areas further west which have seen huge amounts of rain will finally turn drier, brighter, with some decent sunny spells developing by the end of the day on Sunday".

Storm Callum claimed its other victim in England, at about 1.30am on Saturday.

Guests arriving at the royal wedding of Princess Eugenie and fiance Jack Brooksbank in Windsor were also buffeted by high winds, with some hats blown off and many having to hold them.

"The rain will continue to push northwards through Saturday night, though it will linger in the far north and northern isles.

In addition, leaves and twigs, brought down by the wind, could block drains and culverts, increasing the likelihood of flooding".

"However, for this event, safety comes first and we have taken the decision to postpone the event due to expected adverse weather conditions in the area".
