Cologne 'hostage situation': German police swoop on train station

The hostage sustained light injuries and was taken care of.

"Eye-witnesses reported hearing shots, others spoke of smoke bombs, but we can not confirm any of that so far", a police spokesman told news channel NTV.

Several local outlets reported that multiple people may have been taken hostage.

The man had held the woman for two hours in a pharmacy at the city's main railway station.

RPT police said a hostage was taken at Breslauer Platz, a major square near the busy train station.

The suspect is probably a 55-year-old Syrian citizen, Cologne's deputy police chief Miriam Brauns said, adding that police found identification documents in the back of the pharmacy that showed that the owner of the papers was allowed to stay in Germany until mid-2021.

"We have indications that one man is holding one woman, but we haven't been able to really get close", Schulte said.

Police could not confirm eye-witness reports that shots and explosions were heard.

Police stormed the pharmacy and captured the hostage-taker.

It wasn't immediately clear how the man was injured and police said on Twitter that emergency personnel were trying to revive him with CPR.

German railroad operator Deutsche Bahn tweeted that some of the station's tracks were shut down temporarily. Police would not speculate on whether the hostage situation was terror-related.
