Two dead in Ukrainian fighter jet crash, U.S. pilot 'involved'

'Today, about 5 p.m., near Ulanov village (between Berdychev and Khmelnyk) during the performance of the training-combat flight, the fighter aircraft Su-27 crashed. USAFE also said that mishap is already under investigation.

In its own statement, the U.S. Air Force was not immediately able to confirm any casualties. "It is now under investigation and we will continue to provide more information as it becomes available", it added.

Fox News reports the pilot was one of two aboard a Ukrainian fighter jet that crashed during a joint military training involving the U.S. Military and their counterparts in Ukraine.

Fighter aircraft Su-27 crashed in Vinnytsia region, central Ukraine on Tuesday as the press service of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported.

The U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Africa has since confirmed that the U.S. service member, who has not been identified, was of the 144th Fighter Wing of California Air National Guard in Fresno.

The joint military training was billed as the "first-ever Clear Sky exercise", to be held primarily at Starokostiantyniv Air Base in Ukraine as well as other training areas and ranges in the region. Moreover, officers from the Ukrainian Air Force have started their own investigation into the cause of the crash.

"This year marks the 25th anniversary of collaboration between the California Air National Guard and Ukraine as part of U.S. European Command's State Partnership Program, and this exercise will include robust participation of California ANG units".
