Astros under scrutiny in sign-stealing controversy against Red Sox

Red Sox manager (and former Astros bench coach) Alex Cora agreed.

On Wednesday, MLB released a statement saying the league was alerted to possible sign stealing schemes and other improper use of video equipment prior to the postseason, and thus implemented additional security measures. When asked if he thought there was anything going on in those first two games at Fenway Park against his old club, Cora responded, "No, I don't".

"We are aware of the matter, and it will be handled internally", Pat Courtney, MLB's chief communications officer, said Tuesday night, following Boston's 8-2 victory in Game 3 at Houston's Minute Maid Park.

According to the Metro report, which cited multiple security sources who were on the scene, a man was removed during the third inning of Game 1 on Saturday night at Fenway Park but allowed to stay in the ballpark after another Astros staffer intervened.

"It really is in Major League Baseball's hands", Red Sox President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski told reporters Tuesday night. The Yankees, too, were also fined for violating a rule pertaining to the use of the dugout phone, and there have been similar reports that other teams believe the Yankees use the YES Network to steal signs from opponents. Cora noted before Game 3 that the club was exploring contingency plans, with Eduardo Rodriguez in a spot start, David Price on short rest or a bullpen game all being options. Clevinger allowed one run and three hits in five innings, but took the loss as the Indians were pounded 11-3. But if you want to consider it "spying", they were only "spying" to make sure that the Red Sox were not spying. We'll see if the Red Sox have any more epic moments in store. "We try to slow it down and if we feel there's something going on, we try to switch the signs". But I just heard today'.

Sale joined the Red Sox in Houston on Tuesday after being hospitalized for a stomach illness on the heels of Game 1 in Boston.

All of the suspicion has added to the length of each game, as both teams' catchers have routinely walked to the mound to confer with their pitchers, usually while covering their mouths with their gloves.

The utilization of technology in sign-stealing efforts isn't likely to go away, and it'll continue to force teams and players into more rigorous efforts to protect signs. Bauer wasn't specific, but Astros pitchers Lance McCullers Jr. and Collin McHugh defended themselves on social media.
