Trump offers ‘rogue killers’ theory, sends Pompeo to Saudi Arabia

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist, was last seen in public when he entered the consulate on October 2 to obtain papers that would have allowed him to marry his Turkish fiancée.

Turkish authorities claim to have evidence Khashoggi was killed inside the building, a claim the Saudis strenuously deny.

But Trump, who has frequently boasted about his business ties with the kingdom, suggested during the CBS interview that ending USA arms sales to Saudi Arabia would not be an option, saying, "I don't want to hurt jobs".

In an interview with 60 Minutes that aired on Sunday in the US, Mr Trump said if it turns out Saudi Arabia was behind Khashoggi's disappearance, "there will be severe punishment".

The sources said the interrogation was meant to lead to his enforced return to Saudi Arabia.

One source noted that the report was subject to change, but the other source said it could conclude that the operation was carried out without clearance and that those involved will be held responsible. But he has said repeatedly that he does not want to halt a proposed $110 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia - as some in Congress have said he should - because it would harm the USA economically. Jordan related the denial to Saudi Arabia's posture following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The inspection came less than a day after Erdoğan spoke to King Salman on the phone. On Sunday, Saudi Arabia warned that if it "receives any action, it will respond with greater action".

The controversy has troubled Saudi's traditional Western allies - who are key arms suppliers to the kingdom - and also undermined efforts by Mohammed bin Salman to present himself as a modernising ruler.

As of Monday morning, Mnuchin was still moving forward with plans to attend the Future Investment Initiative even as top bank executives and investors have withdrawn over the disappearance of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, according to a person familiar with the trip.

"Larry Kudlow, Mr Trump's economic adviser, said the USA would take "stern action" if necessary" and brushed off Riyadh's threats to drive up oil prices.

Manchester United did not comment on Monday night about reports that Saudi Arabia is interested in buying the club.

Trump has said repeatedly he does not want to halt a proposed $110 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia - as some in Congress have suggested - because it would harm the US economically.

Ryan supported the Khashoggi's family request for an independent, global investigation. The two leaders agreed on a joint working group to investigate the case. Turkey had publicly scolded the Saudi government for refusing repeated requests to search the consulate, where Turkish investigators believe Khashoggi was killed and dismembered by Saudi agents.

It is not clear what kind of search the officials will conduct and whether it will include a forensic examination, given that it has been nearly two weeks since the reporter was last seen.

A cleaning crew with mops and rubbish bags walked in past journalists waiting outside the consulate.

Yahoo News then ran an article quoting someone close to Khashoggi who blamed Trump for the disappearance of his friend.

In a sign of new cooperation between Turkey and Saudi Arabia that could shed light on the disappearance, Turkish investigators wearing coveralls and gloves entered the consulate Monday.
