British PM May says Brexit deal is 95% settled

Meanwhile, Ms Bradley attended the British Irish Parliamentary Assembly (BIPA) plenary session in London, where she said the United Kingdom is committed to upholding the Good Friday Agreement and to avoiding a hard Border.

Mrs May will today discuss Brexit negotiations with her Cabinet, where ministers are expected to warn that there must be a time-limit on any customs backstop amid concerns it could.

Financial markets seized on the possibility that May could be toppled as prime minister by rebels in her Conservative Party, driving sterling below $1.30 to its lowest since October 4.

The EU also volunteered to extend the post-Brexit status quo transition period by a year until the end of 2021.

"Taking all of this together, 95 per cent of the Withdrawal Agreement and its protocols are now settled", she said.

Negotiations on Britain's departure from the European Union are stalled on several issues, but primarily an Irish "backstop" both sides agree is needed to avoid a hard border between the United Kingdom province of Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic, an EU state.

Reference to a UK-wide customs union arrangement would be included in the text of the UK's withdrawal agreement, RTE's Brussels correspondent Tony Connolly said.

Gibraltar, a British overseas territory located at the tip of the Iberian peninsula and regularly claimed by Spain, will leave the European Union along with the UK.

An initial opponent of Brexit, May has long struggled to reach a compromise with European leaders, while staving off criticism from hard-line anti-EU lawmakers within her own Conservative Party and its allies in Parliament, the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

"May also rejected calls for a second referendum on Brexit, describing it as "a politicians" vote".

Britain and the European Union say they remain hopeful of striking a deal this fall, so that relevant parliaments can approve it before Brexit day.

"I do not want to extend the implementation period and I do not believe that extending it will be necessary".

Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab said the exit agreement must be finalised by the end of next month to allow new laws to be put in place in time for exit day.

Well Mark... she asked lawmakers on Monday for patience while the final stages of a Brexit deal are being worked out.

In a further sign that Mrs May had quelled unrest on the Conservative backbenches, Downing Street said she had yet to receive an invitation to appear in front of her MPs.

Steve Baker, a leading ERG member, has tabled amendments to government legislation which could stop Northern Ireland being placed in a different regulatory and customs territory from Great Britain without a vote in the Northern Irish parliament in Stormont. "The Brexit mood music remains negative for the Pound, which could fall more sharply if a leadership challenge materialises in the coming months", says Hardman in a briefing to clients.
