Turkish employees of Saudi consulate give statements in Khashoggi probe

Saudi Arabia admitted that dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi has died, and said it fired two senior officials over the incident that has provoked worldwide outcry. "This was an operation where individuals ended up exceeding the authorities and responsibilities they had", Jubeir said on Fox.

"If Khashoggi was fighting inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, he was fighting for his life with people sent to capture or kill him", said Schiff, the ranking member of the House intelligence committee. "That is unacceptable to the government".

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo asked for Saudi Arabia's transparency in the alleged murder investigation of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi. "Once we have all the facts, we'll make an assessment". He said "it will have no positive consequences if we, as we are doing, now don't pursue our arms exports if at the same time other countries fill this gap".

He added that the killing was a "rogue operation" and an "aberration", and promised that those responsible would be punished.

The foreign minister added that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman - of whom Khashoggi has been highly critical - had not been aware of the killing.

The journalist went missing on October 2 after cameras captured him walking into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

Saudi Arabia has been under pressure to explain what happened, having first said Mr Khashoggi was alive.

The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) and the World Editors Forum (WEF) issued the call for action in a statement on Friday, shortly after Saudi State Television confirmed that Mr. Khashoggi died after an altercation inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that he will "go into detail" about the Khashoggi case in a speech in parliament Tuesday, the same day a glitzy investment forum in Riyadh spearheaded by Prince Mohammed is to take place. Saudi Arabia, in shifting statements, initially claimed no knowledge of his whereabouts, then claimed Khashoggi was unintentionally killed in a fistfight at the consulate.

A growing chorus of US lawmakers including several from President Donald Trump's Republican Party have criticised the Saudi leadership over the affair, but Al Jubeir was confident the US-Saudi relationship would survive the crisis. Statements from the agency said both King Salman and Prince Mohammed express their condolences for his father's death.

"We don't know, in terms of details, how".

Khashoggi's doppelganger and a Saudi hit-squad companion are seen taking a taxi to a local tourist attraction where they enter a men's bathroom; he emerges wearing his own clothes again.

Saudi Arabia claims that Khashoggi was killed after an argument leading to a fist fight has drawn widespread worldwide scorn and skepticism, including from Trump.

"Offering no proof, and contrary to all available evidence, they [Saudis] now expect the world to believe that Jamal died in a fight following a discussion".

President Donald Trump told reporters Saturday afternoon that he would be speaking with the crown prince very soon and is considering placing sanctions on Saudi Arabia, though preferably not on USA sales of arms and other military equipment.
