Erdogan adviser said Khashoggi's body was dismembered and dissolved

"We are shocked and saddened by the efforts of certain Saudi officials to cover up Khashoggi's premeditated murder, rather than serve the cause of justice, as our friendship would require", Erdogan said.

"The incident that happened is very painful, for all Saudis", the crown prince, said during an economic conference in Riyadh.

The journalist's death and Saudi Arabia's inconsistent public statements regarding its responsibility have shocked the world.

Bin Salman has told President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to whom he is close, that low-level officials who had gone rogue had killed Khashoggi.

Istanbul's chief prosecutor announced Wednesday that Khashoggi, who lived in exile in the United States, was strangled immediately after he entered and that his body was dismembered and removed from the consulate.

"The murder of an innocent person is one crime", said Mr Aktay, who was the first government official contacted by Mr Khashoggi's fiancée, Hatice Cengiz, after he went missing.

"Though Riyadh has detained 18 suspects, it is deeply concerning that no action has been taken against the Saudi consul general, who lied through his teeth to the media and fled Turkey shortly afterward", Erdogan said. According to the latest information, the reason why they broke up the body was to make it dissolve more easily.

Turkey's ruling party said on Friday it would file a criminal complaint against the leader of the main opposition party for comments about the investigation into the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

We therefore respectfully call on you to immediately authorize an independent, worldwide investigation into the murder of Jamal Khashoggi that would lay the groundwork for identifying and holding accountable the perpetrators of this grievous crime. Khashoggi was not a formal member of the organization.

The New York Times, quoting two people familiar with the matter, reported Friday that White House officials knew from an October 9 phone call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that he considered Khashoggi a risky Islamist, and therefore knew the Saudi prince had a potential motive for the killing. The call reportedly took place before Saudi authorities admitted that Khashoggi had been killed in the consulate.

Other lawmakers urged the United States not to forsake justice for Khashoggi, in the interest of preserving trade interests with Saudi Arabia.

But such ideas were quickly discarded as unrealistic, in part because no one would be willing to risk taking such a job, or to appear to counter Prince Mohammed while he retains full control of all the Saudi intelligence and security services as well as the aging king's ear.

After the Saudi journalist first disappeared on October 2, Saudi Arabia claimed that he had left their Istanbul consulate soon after entering it.

The Turks added that the Saudi prosecutor also said no statement had been made by Saudi authorities about the existence of the purported local cooperator.
