Welbeck has 'significant' ankle injury, Arsenal confirm

Welbeck returned to the starting line-up for the match at the Emirates Stadium and wasted an early chance to break the deadlock.

Welbeck required oxygen and had to be stretchered off the field after landing awkwardly on his ankle after he contested a header in Sporting's box.

Welbeck has already suffered two long-term knee injuries since joining Arsenal in 2014, missing a majority of the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.

He deservedly received a call up to Gareth Southgate's England squad this afternoon but after what looks like a serious injury against Sporting CP tonight, it looks like he will be out for a long spell.

"He has been taking to the hospital. We are going to wait".

"Danny was working well".

"I feel very sorry for Welbeck, he is a great person".

Still images of the incident showed Welbeck's right ankle caught underneath him in an awkward position as his body went to ground.

"Lichtsteiner is muscular", he added.

Starsport brings you everything you need to know about Welbeck's injury blow.

But it is believed that Welbeck broke his leg - something which is likely to keep him sidelined for the remainder of the season - based on the reactions of the players around him.

"He's been so unlucky with injuries over the past few years, but he's a good character and got a good set of lads around him so we'll lift him up and get him back as soon as we can".

As the Lithuanian referee Ged Mazelka blew for half-time following a period of shapeless, scrappy play the only thing one could really say about the opening 45 minutes was to wish the popular "Welbz" well.
