Deputy national security adviser Mira Ricardel forced out of White House

The other main takeaway from Trump's trip - the round criticism of a decision to scrap a visit to an American military cemetery due to the rain - has reportedly left the president incensed, and the prospect of a White House shakeup all the greater.

"He listens to her more intently than anyone and respects her advice and counsel not only because she is his wife, but because her loyalty, grace, trust, elegance under fire, intellect and instincts are time-tested and proven", the president's friend, Thomas J. Barrack Jr., told The New York Times in August.

A spokesman for the National Security Council had no immediate comment. "Some people, they don't work there anymore", she said at the time.

And yet repeatedly during Ricardel's tenure, news stories trickled out of the troubled White House that suggested she wasn't managing teams or working within them particularly well.

A source familiar with Ricardel's White House performance said she has run afoul of much of the NSC staff and "sort of alienated everyone" except for Bolton, who is now traveling in Asia with Vice President Mike Pence.

Trump has told White House officials he has begun contemplating replacements for Nielsen.

Ricardel was seen at an official White House event with the president as Grisham's statement was issued and was shown in a tweet that the president sent out after the event.

According to U.S. media reports earlier this week, Mrs Trump and Mrs Ricardel quarrelled over seating arrangements on her plane.

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump (L), followed by White House senior advisers Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, make their way to board Air Force One before departing from Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv on May 23, 2017.

Nielsen worked on disaster-management response in the Bush White House, then in the private sector and academia as a cyber security expert before returning to DHS to work as chief of staff under Kelly when he was Homeland Security secretary during Trump's first six months in office.

The drama surrounding Ricardel's possible ouster surfaced while Bolton was half a world away in Singapore, where he is attending the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit.

Bolton and Ricardel allegedly believe that Mattis is not "ideologically aligned" with Trump, according to Foreign Policy magazine, which quoted a former official saying that the two were trying "to build the sense that he is done for".

Ricardel "no longer deserves the honour", Melania Trump's spokeswoman announced Tuesday, amid a falling out that press leaks say is partly linked to a dispute over seating arrangements on the plane that took the first lady for a tour of African countries in October.

West Wing and NSC officials are more upset at the way the East Wing handled the matter than the substance of the effort to push Ricardel out.

Post midterms, he's already lost one senior member of his administration in former attorney-general Jeff Sessions.

"More, Do You?" Colbert snarked.
