Trump says he'll deliver answers to Mueller questions next week

US President Donald Trump said Friday he had personally written - though not yet submitted - answers to the questions put to the White House by Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation, while once more assailing the probe as a "witch hunt". He called the Mueller probe "illegal" and said, without evidence, that Mueller's team was "screaming and shouting at people, horribly threatening them to come up with the answers they want".

He told reporters in the Oval Office Friday that he - and not his lawyers - wrote the answers and that it "didn't take very long to do them".

Trump and his lawyers had been in negotiations with Mueller's team over how the president would be questioned as part of the investigation, including whether he would appear in person.

However, many have characterized Trump's submission of written answers as a major step in Mueller's investigation into possibles ties between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

President Donald Trump and his legal team have taken issue with some of the questions from special counsel Robert Mueller that cover the transition period after the 2016 election, believing it could be off limits under executive privilege.

Trump had huddled with lawyer at the White House this week but made clear: "my lawyers don't write answers, I write answers".

The president's remarks were fresh evidence of his return to the ominous rhythms of the Russian Federation probe after spending weeks enjoying adulation at campaign rallies before the midterm elections.

Despite Trump's insistence Friday that he's "very happy" with how things are going, his frustrations with the ongoing probe have been evident everywhere from his overheated Twitter feed this week to his private grousing that the special counsel may target his family. There's also the criticism he's getting over his choice for acting attorney general, as well as late-arriving election results that have largely been tipping toward House Democrats.

"They are a disgrace to our Nation and don't care how many lives they ruin". Although its investigation is a "hoax", he said, Trump also said he has heard it will probably wrap up soon and that "I'm sure it would be fine".

Trump fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions and named Sessions' chief of staff Matthew Whitaker as acting attorney general on November 7. Whitaker has been a vocal opponent of the special counsel probe.

Democrats and a number of Republicans have raised concerns about Mr Whitaker's appointment, with a bipartisan group of USA senators renewing a push for legislation to protect the special counsel.

One argument against Whitaker was that he has not been confirmed by Senate.

Trump stressed that he has been "busy" and that it has taken some time to complete the answers, but he also expressed his concern about Mueller's objective in obtaining them.

Even as Trump mused in the West Wing about making staffing changes, he pushed back against media coverage of his recent setbacks. "We are the envy of the world". He said some were "unnecessary", some were "possible traps" and that "we might consider some as irrelevant".
