White House plans to let Jim Acosta's press pass expire; CNN responds

The rules come after a judge ordered the White House to reinstate the press pass for CNN correspondent Jim Acosta, who angered President Donald Trump by asking more than one question.

Last Friday CNN won a temporary restraining order, forcing the White House to restore Acosta's press access to the White House for 14 days.

The White House letter, seeking to address the question of due process, said Acosta "violated basic standards" of news events when he got into a heated exchange with President Donald Trump on November 7. Judge Timothy J. Kelly ruled on Fifth Amendment grounds, saying Acosta's right to due process had been violated.

But just hours after that ruling was handed down, Acosta says he received a letter from the White House, announcing their intentions not to renew his press pass when the court order expires at the end of the month. Trump responded by branding Acosta a "rude, awful person".

"The White House's interaction with the press is, and generally should be, subject to a natural give-and-take". Late Friday, top officials named as defendants in the suit from CNN and Acosta suggested that the "preliminary" decision to revoke Acosta's pass earlier this month could be final if he doesn't submit materials to argue his case by November 18, for a final decision November 19.

A journalist called upon to ask a question will ask a single question and then will yield the floor to other journalists;(2) At the discretion of the President or other White House official taking questions, a follow-up question or questions may be permitted; and where a follow up has been allowed and asked, the questioner will then yield the floor;(3) "Yielding the floor" includes, when applicable, physically surrendering the microphone to White House staff for use by the next questioner.

"People have to behave", he told reporters Friday in response to questions about Acosta, adding, "we're writing up rules and regulations to make our position".

CNN, a frequent target of Trump's criticism of the news media, said in a statement its lawsuit challenging the White House's actions was no longer necessary.

"The fact that he was appointed by Trump, I'm sure, is part of him trying to be cautious here so it looks like the judiciary is fair", Gainor states.

Such move would likely spark more litigation against the White House.

In an interview with Fox News' Chris Wallace aired Sunday.

"If he misbehaves", Trump said, apparently referring to Acosta, "we'll throw him out or we'll stop the news conference".
