White House plays down climate report's alarming findings

A long-awaited climate report that the Trump administration released on Black Friday reportedly in an attempt to bury the news, shows that climate change is already having a dramatic effect on life in the USA, and that among the things it will damage is the American economy. Outside of Christmas and the actual day of Thanksgiving, there's no better day to drop bad news that you don't want people to see.

Former GOP Rep. Tom Delay, whose Houston area was battered by Hurricane Harvey previous year, called the National Climate Assessment "nothing more than ... an alarmist political document (written) by scientists that get paid to further the politics of global warming".

"You're going to have to have China and Japan and all of Asia and all these other countries, you know, it [the report] addresses our country", he said, as reported by the BBC. Trump has argued that "raking" forests would mitigate wildfire risk, and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has backed up the president's assertions, claiming that poor forest management was the real risk - not climate change.

"People are going to die if we don't start addressing climate change ASAP", Ocasio-Cortez tweeted Friday.

The effects will spill into global trade, hitting import and export prices and United States businesses with overseas operations and supply chains, it added.

How can @realDonaldTrump still think climate change is a "hoax"? Where the hell is GLOBAL WARMING???

The White House has allegedly dismissed the report as a partisan hit job by Obama loyalists who relied on "extreme models" to draw conclusions. "It doesn't put it far off in the distance, it doesn't talk about polar bears, and that's what we need more of with these types of reports - not just all the graphs and jargon".

Regional economies and industries that depend on natural resources and a favorable climate, including agriculture, tourism and fisheries, will suffer, the report finds.

"What the USA needs to do is participate in a long-term conversation about how you get to innovation, and it's going to need to be a conversation again that doesn't start with alarmism", Sasse said.

And yet, the chances of Trump taking any of the advice from this report, which was conducted by HIS administration, are somewhere close to zero. Why?

"I had breakfast this morning too, and that doesn't mean we alleviated world hunger - and that's what that logic is like".

He also seemed to push the blame to other nations, saying the United States is 'the cleanest we've ever been'.

Blake Hurst, president of the Missouri Farm Bureau, said Monday the report was "pretty disturbing" but agreed that agricultural producers will have to meet the challenge.

"This demonstrates once again that Donald Trump is not an individual to be taken seriously on any topic, let alone matters as serious as climate change", Michael Mann, a climate scientist at Pennsylvania State University, said to HuffPost last week about the president's "cold blast" tweet. It's the culmination of years of work from more than 300 researchers, who have combed through the published literature on climate change in the country.

'This report makes it clear that climate change is not some problem in the distant future.
