English couple thanks NYC police for finding lost engagement ring

Times Square's official website even offers help for people who want to go big with a proposal on one of its famous billboards.

Likely having other things to do, but remembering it's the holiday season, special operations cops make it their mission to find and rescue the ring from underneath the streets, trapped inside a subway grate.

Passersby look on as a man (right) peers through a utility grate in Times Square, New York, after the engagement ring he was giving his girlfriend fell from his hands.

The couple says they're "so thankful to everyone - especially the New York Police Department".

NYPD is expected to release more information later Sunday. "We are making arrangements for them to get the ring back", NYPD Sergeant Jessica McRorie told ABC News.

After recovering the ring Saturday, police kicked off a manhunt on social media, tweeting several photos of the ring, which they cleaned for the couple, along with security footage of their reaction to its fall.

Just before midnight on Friday in Times Square, a man proposed to the woman he hoped would become his wife.

They're now liasing with the police to get the ring back. But by then the couple was nowhere to be found. "Every argument between them will end with "at least I didn't drop the engagement ring down the sewer grate", a twitter user BigJim wrote".

"Thank you, Twitter. Case closed!" the NYPD posted Sunday afternoon, along with a photo of the happy couple.
