James Comey appears before House Judiciary Committee in closed session

Comey resisted, arguing the GOP-led investigation in the decision-making by the FBI and the Justice Department in 2016 and 2017 was politically motivated.

Former FBI Director James Comey, with his attorney, David Kelley, left, arrive to testify under subpoena behind closed doors before the House Judiciary and Oversight Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, Friday, Dec. 7, 2018.

Comey had fought the congressional subpoena in court, pushing for a public hearing before settling for some concessions.

Apparently Trump thinks that even a 50% approval rating is low for him, claiming via Twitter, that it would instead be at 75% if it wasn't for the "phony Russia Witch Hunt".

This comes as the special counsel gears up to file documents on key players in the probe.

It seems as though that's what we've been hearing from Trump ever since Robert Mueller was appointed to look into Russian election interference and possible collusion on behalf of the Trump campaign.

"One of the disappointments of this deposition so far has been the amount of times in which the Federal Bureau of Investigation believes that Congress doesn't have a right to know", Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said, according to Fox News. "The entire goal of this investigation is to cast aspersion on the real investigation, which is Mueller".

The committee is expected to release a transcript of the Comey interview as early as Saturday. Comey had argued that Republicans would selectively leak details and mischaracterize the proceedings. "Force him to answer the questions under oath!"

Over the previous year, Republicans on the Judiciary and House Oversight and Government Reform panels have brought in a series of officials and said after the closed-door meetings that there is evidence of bias.

"It is being reported that Leakin' James Comey was told by Department of Justice attorneys not to answer the most important questions", Trump tweeted. The investigation's most public moment was a 10-hour hearing in which former FBI special agent Peter Strzok defended anti-Trump texts he sent to a colleague as he helped lead both investigations.

The Republican chairman of the House's judiciary committee, Virginia Rep.

Comey, who has testified publicly on Capitol Hill about both the Clinton and Russian Federation investigations, balked at the subpoena because he said committees were prone to selectively reveal information for political purposes.

Both Goodlatte and Issa are retiring at the end of this session, with Issa having been nominated in September for a post in Trump's Trade and Development Agency.
