[Newsmaker] Canada says second citizen 'missing' in China

Now that Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou has been released on bail in Vancouver - a common sense decision that reflects her health concerns and bona fides - attention will turn to next steps in the case involving USA allegations against her.

Their cases will fuel suspicions China is retaliating against Canada's arrest of Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Chinese telecom giant Huawei, at Washington's request on allegations related to breaking Iran sanctions.

Canadians are being cautioned by federal officials about travelling to China and to continue to 'exercise a high degree of caution, ' if visiting the country.

Freeland said it would be "up to Ms Meng's lawyers whether they choose to raise comments in the United States as part of their defence of Ms Meng". She was detained after a United States request for her extradition to face charges of violating sanctions against Iran.

Canada's relationship with Donald Trump has reached a "new level of frustration" after the US president's comments this week on the arrest of Huawei's chief financial officer, says a senior source. "You have a problem with us'".

Lu said that the Canadian embassy had been notified that the two men were being held under "compulsory measures" and that their "legitimate rights and interests" were being upheld.

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland confirmed that a Canadian had reached out to Canada before Monday's arrest.

Mr Lu said Ms Meng's arrest was "wrong practice", adding: "I can point out that, since the Canadian government took the wrong action at the request of the U.S. and took Meng Wanzhou into custody, many Chinese are wondering if their trips to Canada are safe".

ICG has said that it has not received any information about Kovrig since his arrest.

Trudeau travelled to China past year but returned home without a formal agreement between the two countries to begin formal free trade talk negotiations.

Canadian foreign ministry spokesman Guillaume Bérubé confirmed that Mr Spavor had contacted it earlier in the week because "he was being asked questions by Chinese authorities".

Experts quoted by the Chinese tabloid Global Times, a mouthpiece of China's communist government, also raised the prospects of a decline in the number of visits by Chinese tourists and businessmen to Canada.

Meng is now facing extradition to the United States.

"There was no political involvement", she added.

Earlier, the prime minister disclosed he had received advance notice from the RCMP about their intention to arrest Meng.

China threatened "grave consequences" if Meng was not immediately released, in a strong message delivered to Canadian Ambassador John McCallum when he was called into the Chinese Foreign Ministry last weekend to receive Chinese protests.

In an op-ed published in The Globe and Mail, Shaye accused Canada and members of the Five Eye countries of concocting a smear campaign against Huawei that has "sown fear and misled" the people about the company.

It is one of the world's biggest telecommunications companies.

It appears the approval of the merger hinges on both companies' parent companies refusing to use Huawei equipment. However, several countries - including the U.S., Australia, and Japan - refuse to use Huawei equipment for all or some networking purposes.

After three days of hearings, Meng was released on bail of C$10million (US$7.4million) on Tuesday evening - on the condition she surrender her two passports and agree to wear an ankle bracelet.

Meng was arrested while changing planes in Vancouver, outraging China and sparking a diplomatic standoff between the North American allies and Beijing.
