Want gender equality at work? wait 200 years

To date, only four out of 18 countries in the region have fully closed their Education Attainment gender gap, but more than half of the countries in the region have closed the gender gap for professional and technical workers, indicating a "relatively successful integration of tertiary educated, higher-skilled women into the labour force".

"While a lot of the narrative in the past tended to focus on men in blue collar work in factories, there are a lot of women in blue collar or service work that are also being displaced - and that trend is starting to become more marked", she said. To date, said the WEF, there was still a 32pc average gender gap that remained to be closed.

The Davos, Switzerland-based organization comes to the sobering conclusion that despite recent progress in providing equal opportunities for both sexes, it would take another 108 years for the gender gap to close on a global scale. It was followed by other Nordic countries, with Norway in second, Sweden in third and Finland in fourth place.

Chinese women lag the furthest behind men in the political arena, where the vanishing number of women in the National People's Congress and State Council - the Chinese parliament and cabinet respectively - put the country's political empowerment gap at 83.6%.

Women rally to demand equal pay for women and an end to the wage gap. The report revealed that the world has closed 68% of its gender gap, as measured across four key pillars, economic opportunity, political empowerment, educational attainment, and health and survival.

The UAE has been ranked as the top country in the Middle East and North Africa for wage equality, according to a new report released by the World Economic Forum (WEF).

The WEF survey, covering 149 countries, examined gender equality in the fields of politics, economy, education and health. "They work continuously for fewer years than men, since only women get pregnant, and most women are not prepared to instantly dump the baby on somebody else to raise".

The level of estimated earned income, by purchasing power, was $52,590 for men and $24,054 for women.

"In the workplace, women still encounter significant obstacles in taking on managerial or senior official roles", the report said. Among Asian countries, only the Philippines (0.799) made it into the top 10.

Across the 149 countries assessed by the report, there were just 17 that now had women as heads of state, while on average just 18pc of ministers and 24pc of parliamentarians globally were women.

WEF executive chairman Klaus Schwab commented, "Proactive measures that support gender parity and social inclusion and address historical imbalances are essential for the health of the global economy as well as for the good of society as a whole".
