8-year-old Guatemalan migrant dies in U.S. custody on Christmas Day

In an official statement, the Department of Homeland Security reported that a USA border patrol agent noticed the minor exhibiting symptoms of illness on Monday and transported the boy, with his father, to a local hospital.

Hospital staff diagnosed the boy with a common cold and a fever, and released him in the mid-afternoon with prescriptions for antibiotics and ibuprofen.

On Monday evening, the boy was nauseous and vomited.

The agency said the cause of death had not been determined, and that the Department of Homeland Security's inspector-general and the Guatemalan government had been notified.

The father and son were not identified, and the agency said it would release more details "as available and appropriate".

A 7-year-old Guatemalan girl died of dehydration and septic shock while in government custody earlier this month.

A 7-year-old girl, Jakelin Caal Maquin, fled Guatemala with her father, and after surviving the 3218km journey to New Mexico, she died December 8, fewer than 48 hours after CBP detained her and her father.

Felipe Gonzalez, the United Nations special rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, said Monday that the U.S. government's detention of children due to their immigration status violated global law.

The boy and his father were held on December 24th.

CBP announced last week that it would begin informing Congress and the media within 24 hours after someone dies in its custody.

Thousands of migrants have travelled from Central America to the United States border.

The statement says CBP needs the help of other government agencies to care for children it is detaining.

He is the second Guatemalan child to die in CBP custody this month. The form was in English, but CBP officials said agents provided a verbal translation.

Her death reignited debate in the United States over immigration policy and the treatment of migrants. In a statement, the ministry said it also requested medical reports to clarify the cause of death.

The child had seizures and a fever, and was flown to the hospital, where she went into cardiac arrest and died.

Xochitl Torres Small, a Democrat who will represent the district starting in January, called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the children's deaths and more medical resources along the border.

On Christmas Eve, the boy "appeared lethargic and nauseous again" and the agents took the boy to the hospital where he eventually died. It was not immediately known if the watchdog would open an investigation.
