Saudi king orders major government reshuffle

Saudi Arabia's King Salman ordered a government reshuffle on Thursday, appointing a new foreign minister and refreshing other top posts, after the global fallout over the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Turki al-Sheikh, a close aide to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was removed as the head of the kingdom's sports commission and named entertainment authority chief.

Assaf, a former long-serving finance minister and a board member of national oil giant Saudi Aramco, was among several people detained as part of a "corruption crackdown" in November, 2017.

Musaed al-Aiban was appointed national security adviser.

Al-Jubeir's post was taken by Ibrahim al-Assaf, a long-time finance minister of the Kingdom.

The king also ordered the creation of a national space agency to be led by one of his other sons, Prince Sultan bin Salman, a former astronaut.

Assaf was released within weeks of his detention at Riyadh's Ritz-Carlton hotel past year after being cleared of wrongdoing and without making any payment to the state, as many others held in the crackdown had to do.

The reshuffle would help the crown prince further "consolidate power" as many of those promoted were his "key allies", tweeted Ali Shihabi, head of the pro-Saudi think tank The Arabia Foundation.

Turki Shabbaneh, a Saudi TV presenter, was named minister of media.

"You can not delink Khashoggi from any developments, though government reshuffles are customary every four years", said Mohammed Alyahya, a senior fellow at the Gulf Research Centre. "There is an effort to balance the fast pace of reform with bolstering government procedures and institutions".

Senior U.S. lawmakers have blamed the crown prince the murder of columnist Jamal Khashoggi in Turkey, a conclusion they said was backed by the Central Intelligence Agency.

The killing badly damaged Prince Mohammed's worldwide image as a transformational leader committed to changes Saudi Arabia's allies in the West long hoped for.

After the reshuffle, Prince Mohammed is set to maintain his political and security posts, including that of defence minster.

"Because the Saudi consul general in Istanbul was very much involved in the killing of Khashoggi and that would fall under al-Jubeir". While President Donald Trump has sought to emphasize the importance of the US alliance with Saudi Arabia, prominent senators have come out against the crown prince, with one, Republican Lindsey Graham, describing him as "crazy" and "dangerous".

Saudi Arabia denies the crown prince knew of the plot.
