Here Are Three Crazy Market Statistics on a Wild Day of Trading

- USA stocks surged Wednesday, recovering all their losses from a Christmas Eve plunge and placing the market on track for its best day in nine months.

All three major US indices jumped sharply on Wednesday, the first trading day after the worst Christmas Eve session on record.

The Dow rose 258 points, or 1.1 percent, adding to Wednesday's record gain of 1,086 points.

"A strong sell-off on Monday sent the major indexes down more than 2 percent and ended with the S&P 500 falling into a bear market".

The S&P index recorded no new 52-week highs and one new lows, while the Nasdaq recorded three new highs and 89 new lows. Stocks are also on track for their worst December since 1931, during the depths of the Great Depression.

The S&P and the Dow have fallen about 12 percent for the year, while the Nasdaq has shed 10 percent, with just four more trading sessions left to wrap up the year.

Gains for the sector seem to have been helped on news that holiday sales increased 5.1 percent year over year to more than $850 billion this year.

Even as some people on Main Street may have been heading out to the mall to burn off some of that holiday roast, consumer discretionary stocks were the biggest gainers on Wall Street.

US stock futures pointed to a slight rebound Wednesday morning in the wake of Wall Street's steep fall on Monday.

Stocks are looking to stop one of the most miserable Decembers on record, as a host of headwinds combined to drag down America's benchmark index. The Hang Seng index fell 0.7 percent and Australia's S&P-ASX 200 jumped 1.9 percent.

Gains in banks, retailers and health care companies are outweighing losses in energy stocks and elsewhere in the market.

The gains were led by technology stocks.SPLRCT, which rose 1.49 percent. The Dow slid 359 points, or 1.5 percent, to 22,520.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slumped about 360 points in early afternoon trading today after dropping as much as 528 points earlier.

Energy stocks also rebounded as the price of US crude oil posted its biggest one-day gain in more than two years.

The Dow gained 1,086.25 points on the day's trading - a rise of 4.98 percent - to close at 23,878.45 on Wednesday. Amazon had its biggest gain in more than a year. Visa added 7 percent to $130.23, while Mastercard gained 6.7 percent to $186.43.

Bonds prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury slipped to 2.78 percent from 2.79 percent late Wednesday, although the yield dropped as low as 2.73 percent when stocks were near their lowest levels as investors sought safer investments. Britain's FTSE 100 fell 1.5 percent. JPMorgan Chase rose 1.1 percent to $97.04.

According to CNBC, "retailers were among the best performers on Wednesday..."

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rebounded 3.4 percent to 19,986.32.
