Trump blames Dems for deaths of migrant children on the border

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly formally leaves his post this Wednesday, Jan. 2, and he discussed his time with President Trump in an exit interview with the Los Angeles Times published Sunday. "But we left a solid concrete wall early on in the administration when we asked people what they needed and where they needed it", Kelly continued.

President Trump's headstrong refusal to reopen the federal government without new border wall funding has set him on a risky and defiant path for 2019, relying on brazen brinkmanship to shore up his base support and protect him ahead of a challenging year for his administration.

Graham, R-S.C., told CNN State of the Union host Dana Bash he believes a deal that would provide the $5 billion of funding for border security in the form of a wall or other barrier and a three-year one-time renewable work permit for about 70,000 people under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program "might save the day in the Senate".

The latest overtures in the wake of the midterm elections, which brought about sweeping Democratic gains and the end of Republican control of Congress, stand in stark contrast to the historical behavior of modern presidents, who have moved at least briefly toward the political center after being humbled at the ballot box.

Trump also suggested Friday that shutting down the border with Mexico would somehow generate "profit" for the U.S. When asked by ABC News for any evidence or explanation of that claim, the White House did not respond.

"Either we build (finish) the Wall or we close the Border", Trump wrote.

Her argument appears to be a step back from Trump's vow on the 2016 campaign trail to build a wall on the U.S.

"You're talking about cutting off your arm", Avila said.

The partial government shutdown will nearly certainly be handed off to a divided government to solve in the new year, as both parties traded blame Friday and President Donald Trump sought to raise the stakes in the weeklong impasse.

Preventing a Pelosi-led House from oversight functions might be of particular interest, as Democrats already plan a massive blitz of investigations into Trump's finances, policies, and potentially corrupt acts by his Cabinet.

Trump wants $5 billion in funding for a wall along the more than 2,000-mile border, which he says is now too porous to stop illegal immigration and which he says has become a magnet for criminals, drugs and even terrorists.

Pelosi's spokesman, Drew Hammill, said in a statement on Friday that Democrats "are united against the President's immoral, ineffective and expensive wall - the wall that he specifically promised that Mexico would pay for". Other options include passing appropriations for all parts of the government except Homeland Security, which is where the wall funding would come from, or adopting a continuing resolution to fund agencies through the end of the fiscal year.

Mulvaney said Schumer was "really interested in doing a deal and coming to some sort of compromise" but he understood that Pelosi was at risk of losing the speakership of the House if she went along. He also said the compromise should include changes in federal law to discourage people from trying to enter the US illegally. "Nancy Pelosi is in Hawaii", Conway said.

But he added: "Illegal immigrants, overwhelmingly, are not bad people", describing many migrants as victims of traffickers.

In Mexico, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador sidestepped Trump's threat, telling journalists: "We don't want to be imprudent and we don't think we should get into this".
