Roger Federer Beats Serena Williams At Hopman Cup In Australia

The tennis legends will meet on the court for the first time in a mixed doubles match Tuesday between Switzerland and the U.S.at the Hopman Cup in Perth, Australia.

Roger Federer emerged triumphant from a historic first meeting with Serena Williams in the Hopman Cup on Tuesday, but tennis was the true victor as two of the game's greats treated fans worldwide to an unforgettable evening.

Holding a combined total of 43 grand-slam singles titles, the pair of 37-year-olds were pitted against each other in the deciding mixed doubles rubber of the tie between Switzerland and United States.

Earlier, Federer beat Tiafoe 6-4, 6-1 in the men's singles before Williams' 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Bencic.

Leading 4-1 in the first set, Williams looked set to be cruising to a comfortable victory until her 21-year-old opponent hit back to win the next five games and take the opener. "I used to practice with some women's players, when I was younger, you know, when I was maybe 15 and I was at the national tennis center and I used to play sets with the pro-women", said Roger Federer.

Federer echoed Williams' excitement, assuring fans the two sides will be playing to win - and that such a competition might only come around once in their careers.

Federer lavished praise on the 23-time grand slam victor, saying the upcoming match will be something special. "This is so cool".

"You know I've been training offseason to be ready for Roger, so not sure how I'm going to do but we'll see", Williams said with a laugh after losing to her sister Venus at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.

"Both on the court and off the court has such charisma and he's such a wonderful player".

'Great champion, you can see how determined and focused she is - I love that about her'. "It's an unbelievable story unto itself - and then she became one of the greatest, if not the greatest tennis player of all time". "You're a superman over there because it's hard with just one", she said.

"I admire everything she's done on and off the court".

But the mixed doubles clash was always going to hog the spotlight given it was the first time Federer had faced off against Williams in a competitive match. In an escalating argument, she called him a "thief" and accused him of stealing a point from her.

World No.3 Roger Federer has been left feeling reassured that his game is in good shape after opening his Hopman Cup campaign with a 6-1 6-1 demolition of Cameron Norrie.

He and teammate Bencic are the defending champions at Hopman.
