North Korea to adopt new path if sanctions kept: Kim

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said on Tuesday that his resolve for complete denuclearization remains unchanged but he may have to seek a "new path" if the United States continues to demand unilateral action from his country.

The North Korean leader did say he was willing to meet Mr Trump again - and said relations can "advance at a fast and excellent pace" if the U.S. eases sanctions and halts joint military exercises with South Korea.

Mr Kim also said the U.S. should continue to halt its joint military exercises with ally South Korea and not deploy strategic military assets to the South.

Kim said he wanted to restart a joint economic zone in Kaesong and a joint tourism project at Mount Kumgang in the North "without preconditions".

Last year's New Year's Day address came at a time of much greater tension, but Kim used that opportunity to balance tough talk with a rare olive branch to South Korea.

The young North Korean leader also called on Washington and Seoul to end the joint military drills between the two countries.

North Korea also has bristled at USA demands to provide a detailed account of nuclear and missile facilities that would be inspected and dismantled under a potential deal. However, Town said the US then renewed a travel ban on USA citizens to North Korea, imposed more sanctions, have continued to talk about maximum pressure, and have essentially cut off humanitarian aid assistance to North Korea. He also pointed to a potential second meeting with Trump.

Kim and Trump met June 12 in Singapore where they signed a vague statement on a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula without describing when and how it would occur.

But North Korea for decades has been pushing a concept of denuclearization that bears no resemblance to the American definition, with Pyongyang vowing to pursue nuclear development until the United States removes its troops and the nuclear umbrella defending South Korea and Japan.

"If the USA fails to carry out its promise to the world. and remains unchanged in its sanctions and pressure upon the DPRK [Democratic People's Republic of Korea], we might be compelled to explore a new path for defending the sovereignty of our country and supreme interests of our state", Kim said in the address.

In what was the first time a North Korean leader met a sitting United States president, the two signed a vaguely phrased agreement to improve ties and work towards denuclearisation.

But while Kim Jong Un says he wants to continue along the diplomatic path, the clear hint is that without some response from the United States, the rapprochement witnessed previous year may go into reverse.

That could mean working with China, South Korea and others in pressing Washington, professor Kim said.

While Kim stated today that he's seeking more concessions from the US, there is no set timeline, nor plans for more talks between the two countries to continue, talks that have already been stalled for months.

The North has also bristled at USA demands to provide a detailed account of nuclear and missile facilities that would be inspected and dismantled under a potential deal.

This photo taken on December 31, 2018 shows a general view of revelers during a New Year's eve countdown event and fireworks display at Kim Il Sung Square in Pyongyang, North Korea.

Kim's reference to pledges not to make nuclear weapons could indicate a first moratorium on such weapons production, although it was not clear if this was conditional.

Although Kim's address - which is an annual tradition in North Korea - is aimed mainly at a domestic audience, worldwide observers parse his words to get a sense of the secretive Pyongyang regime's intentions.

David Maxwell, a North Korea expert and senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies think tank, called the speech and setting "a brilliantly crafted performance".

Kim also warned the U.S.in his remarks that if there was not more progress on the USA side, that North Korea may have to "seek another way".
