House Votes to End Shutdown Amid Trump Veto Threat Over Wall

Pelosi's immediate task? Finding a way to help end a standoff over Trump's border wall demand that has led to a partial government shutdown that is almost two weeks old.

Both sides seem dug in and no new offers have been exchanged among principal negotiators since Vice President Mike Pence floated $2.5 billion as a compromise to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer last month.

"Using the European band Phoenix's Lisztomania, the students created what they call the BU "Lisztomania" Brat Pack Mashup, a homage to the original, which first aired on YouTube previous year", the university said at the time. Instead of handing taxpayer money to worldwide abortion advocates, Speaker Pelosi should heed the words of the Pope named after Saint Francis: "Every life counts: from the beginning to the end, from conception to natural death'".

Cory Gardner, a Republican from Colorado, listens during a Commission on Security and Cooperation hearing on Capitol Hill, February 28, 2018, in Washington, D.C. Cory Gardner became the first Republican senator to suggest the government should end the partial shutdown if it doesn't reach an agreement on funding for President Donald Trump's southern border wall.

Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, for their part, said not all barriers are created equal and Mr. Trump's "big, handsome wall" idea would in fact be "expensive and ineffective".

Pelosi has said that Democrats will pass legislation to reopen government but not provide funding for a wall. And Republican Susan Collins of ME said she saw "no reason why the bills that are ready to go and on which we've achieved an agreement should be held hostage to this debate over border security". There are more women than ever before, and a new generation of Muslims, Latinos, Native Americans and African-Americans in the House is creating what academics call a reflective democracy, more aligned with the population of the United States.

It would also include another measure to fund the departments of Agriculture, Interior, Housing and Urban Development and others closed by the partial shutdown. It also would fund dozens of related agencies including the Environmental Protection Agency and Food and Drug Administration.

The White House veto threat made clear Democrats' latest plans don't clear that threshold.

Trump said his meeting with the union officials had always been planned and just happened to come at "a very opportune time".

President Trump's tweets on Wednesday came hours after he met with Republican and Democratic congressional leaders at the White House for a briefing on border security that, by all accounts, made zero progress. -Mexican border wall - opposed by Democrats - as part of any legislation funding government agencies. "It won't work." He left without taking questions. "You know, I've heard numbers as high as $275 billion we lose on illegal immigration", Trump said.

But President Trump's comments on the length, height and design of his wall have varied widely since 2015, so widely it can be hard to tell what he'd accept in the end. The last time a speaker regained the gavel was more than a half-century ago.

The House's number two Republican, Steve Scalise, said he would be watching closely to see how Pelosi and the Democrats will handle the changing of the political guard. But when pressed in private by Democrats asking why he wouldn't end the shutdown, he responded at one point, "I would look foolish if I did that".

"Earlier today Speaker Pelosi quoted a prayer by Saint Francis: 'Lord make me a channel of thy peace, '" he said in a statement. These workers received paychecks at the end of December but will miss their next checks on January 11 unless the agencies reopen.

Another 380,000 employees have been furloughed without pay.
