USA government pursues criminal charges against Huawei

Huawei denies ties to the Chinese government, and its equipment is widely used in Canada's telecom networks: Bell and Telus partnered with Huawei to test 5G technology, although the federal government has considered banning the company from access to the network.

T-Mobile also claimed it wasn't Huawei's first victim, alleging that the Chinese tech giant also stole source code and other trade secrets from other companies.

An indictment could come soon, the Journal added.

Attendees pass by a Huawei booth during the 2019 CES in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S., on January 9.

The WSJ said the investigation stems in part from a lawsuit that telecoms company T-Mobile brought against Huawei in 2014.

In May 2017, a jury said Huawei should pay T-Mobile $US4.8 million ($6.69 million) in damages.

Huawei equipment has been banned from United States government computers and most U.S. information networks because of concerns that the company's equipment could be used to spy, an allegation long denied by the company.

More news: Deputy US Attorney General Rosenstein expected to resign in weeks

Huawei and the Department of Justice did not comment.

Huawei holds an ever-growing share of the world's smartphone market and is a frontrunner in the race to develop next-generation wireless equipment, which critics say could enable Chinese spying efforts.

For its part, ZTE agreed a year ago to pay a $1 billion fine to the United States that had been imposed because the company breached a US embargo on trade with Iran. She is awaiting extradition hearings to the US while living under restrictions in her million-dollar Vancouver home.

The company was found to have violated USA law in 2016 for selling USA technology to Iran, was fined up to US$1.2 billion and instructed to penalize its workers.

This week, Huawei CEO and founder Ren Zhengfei, who is also the father of Meng Wanzhou, held a rare meeting with global media, during which he denied that Huawei would ever spy for the Chinese government.

In 2012, congressional committees and other US government entities criticized Huawei's "pattern of disregard for the intellectual property rights of other entities and companies in the U.S".

Furthermore, according to Representative Mike Gallagher (R-WI), Chinese telecommunications companies represent an increasing threat to the USA national security, as well as an "intelligence-gathering arm of the Chinese Communist Party" as stated by Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR). As part of the agreement, the US lifted a ban in place since April that had prevented ZTE from buying the USA components it relies on heavily to make smartphones and other devices.
