Trump, North Korean envoy discuss 2nd Trump-Kim summit

"The expression of "enemy" not only encompasses North Korean threats, but also other transnational and nonmilitary threats", the ministry said in a news release about the paper that lays out South Korea's defense and security goals for the next two years.

But an American source, who could not be identified as the schedule has not been announced, said that Pompeo would welcome Kim on Friday for a meal in Washington before the two were expected to head together to the White House.

Kim was supposed to visit in November to meet with Mike Pompeo in NY.

A source told the USA cable news channel that the letter was flown to Pyongyang and delivered by hand over the weekend.

And South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said on Wednesday that the country was discussing "corresponding measures" with the USA to reward North Korea's steps towards denuclearisation.

Kong Xuanyou and Lee Do-Hoon are expected to discuss ways to achieve complete denuclearisation and peace on the peninsula, as well as an expected second summit of United States and North Korean leaders.

Little progress has been made on North Korean de-nuclearisation since their historic summit in Singapore last June.

Working consultation among allies takes place amid speculation about a second meeting between Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) leader Kim Jong-un and U.S. President Donald Trump.

During a previous era of detente in the 2000s, South Korea avoided using the reference, but it revived the term in its defense document after the 2010 attacks by the North.

The US' envoy to North Korea talks, Mr Stephen Biegun, said in December that the administration was considering looser restrictions on getting humanitarian aid and workers into the country.

Many conservatives in South Korea have said that South Korea shouldn't have agreed on conventional arms-reduction programs because North Korea's nuclear threat remains unchanged.

But his trip to Washington is viewed by some as a sign that the sides are getting closer to reaching an agreement regarding a second Trump-Kim Jong Un summit.

White House deputy spokesperson Robert Palladino described the earlier meeting Pompeo and U.S. Special Representative Steve Beigun had with Kim Yong Chol as a good one. "There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea".

Kim's latest trip to China, his fourth since previous year, came as the North's strongest ally has encouraged negotiations with the US while at the same time arguing in favor of immediate easing of sanctions. -North Korea talks as saying that Kim Yong Chol would be carrying a new letter from Kim Jong Un to Trump.

He has also resisted USA demands for a detailed list of his nuclear assets, with state media last month comparing it to handing over a target list.

Asked if the State Department had plans to announce any meetings involving the visiting official, a spokesperson said there were no meetings to announce.

He left the airport through a side door, accompanied by what appeared to be USA and North Korean officials, including Stephen Biegun, the United States special representative for North Korea.

"While a possible new avenue to peace now exists with North Korea, it continues to pose an extraordinary threat and the United States must remain vigilant", the Pentagon assessment says.
