Women's March returns to DC amid shutdown and controversy

Laura Loomer interrupted a speaker during the Women's March in Washington D.C. on Saturday.

Many wore pink "pussy" hats to protest Trump's demeaning comments about women.

She said she didn't mind the frigid temperature.

Some marchers carried posters portraying Trump as a Russian "puppet".

The Federal Plaza rally was announced earlier this month to fill the void after the Women's March Chicago group decided not to host its annual march and rally, saying that the high costs of holding previous events, not the controversy enveloping the national Women's March Inc. group, was the reason.

Rep. Ayanna Pressley addresses the Boston Women's March. He made no public comment about the marches.

Despite the controversy, thousands of women showed up to marches on Saturday.

In New York, several hundred people converged on Manhattan's Foley Square, near the Brooklyn Bridge.

"Instead, this weekend, I will join a movement of women around the nation who are participating in local marches that have distanced themselves from those national Women's March leaders who still ally with bigotry", she said. Kamala Harris of California and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY.

Another Democrat, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of NY, is scheduled to speak Saturday at the Women's March Iowa in Des Moines, after appearing at the 2017 and 2018 events in Washington, D.C. "That means we will not let anyone take our rights away - in fact we will expand them".

During an appearance on "The View", Meghan McCain asked if Women's March leader Tamika Mallory would condemn Farrakhan's statements like "the powerful Jews are my enemy". Nevertheless, traditional business models are no longer sustainable and high-quality publications, like ours, are being forced to look for new ways to keep going.

Leaders of both groups said they would use this year's marches to promote policies related to raising the minimum wage, access to reproductive and healthcare, and voting rights, among other issues.

Chicago Tribune's Hal Dardick contributed. Internal divisions in Seattle resulted in three separate marches taking place, but police said only 4,000 to 5,000 people turned out, compared to an estimated 100,000 in 2017, the Seattle Times said.

The original march helped spark a rise in women's political activism, with a record 131 women now serving in the new US Congress. "The Women's March has never been easy".

But the movement has been riven by controversy, including allegations of anti-Semitism and poor accounting of funds. Two of them, Linda Sarsour, a Palestinian activist who has embraced the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, and co-President Tamika Mallory, have been criticized over their ties to Nation of Islam firebrand Louis Farrakhan. In a recent Facebook post, she claimed Sarsour and Mallory, along with fellow organizers Bob Bland and Carmen Perez, had "steered the Movement away from its true course" and called for all four to step down.

"I just don't feel that anyone has a right to exist at the disposal of another", Mallory added.

Ocasio-Cortez told NY marchers that the November election meant "the start of our advocacy".
