Kamala Harris seeks to make history with 2020 presidential bid

Senator Harris, a daughter of immigrant parents who grew up in Oakland, California, is one of the earliest high-profile Democrats to join what is expected to be a crowded field.

Ms Harris has become popular with liberal activists for her tough questioning of Trump administration appointees and officials, including Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and former attorney general Jeff Sessions, during Senate hearings.

In the first 30 minutes after her announcement, Harris received individual online contributions from all 50 states, spokesman Ian Sams said on Twitter. I'm running to lift those voices.

In her announcement, Harris drew on history, saying it was "very important" to her to tie her campaign to Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement. "Let's claim our future, for ourselves, for our children and for our country", she said.

But she'll have plenty of rivals, some of whom are better-positioned to appeal to the ascendant economic-populist wing of the Democratic Party.

While Chisholm ultimately fell short, her contribution did not go unnoticed, earning her a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015. Robert P. Casey Jr. of Pennsylvania, putting a major dent in the party's chances of fielding a pro-life candidate.

Political foes will pore over Harris' record in California, where some activists questioned whether she should have been more aggressive in pushing for changes to the criminal justice system.

"I am running for president", Harris said in a tweet along with a simultaneously released video message.

Harris's announcement comes about a week after New York Sen. Already in the race are four more women - Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and former housing secretary Julian Castro, among others. She is the third female Democrat to enter the 2020 presidential race following Sen.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) launched her presidential campaign on Monday with an online video and an appearance on "Good Morning America" in which she said that "this is a moment in time that I feel a sense of responsibility to stand up and fight for the best of who we are".

She is facing scrutiny of her past as California's attorney general, a role she held from 2011 to 2017, and San Francisco district attorney, which she was from 2004 until 2011.

Throughout her speech, however, Harris deemphasized her particular identity and instead said that she is speaking for all Americans. "So she's trying to carve out her space", she said, noting that Harris is trying to strike a balance between speaking pointedly to constituencies like African Americans while highlighting issues - like cash bail - that have broad consequences across racial and ethnic lines.

Her signs will carry her campaign theme "Kamala Harris for the people", the words that she spoke each time she rose in the courtroom as a prosecutor. Presently Kamala Harris is on several key panels including the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, the Select Committee on Intelligence, the Committee on the Judiciary, and the Committee on the Budget.

At 54, Harris is also significantly younger than Biden, 76, or Bernie Sanders, 77.

Harris also supports free tuition at four-year public colleges for most Americans, a ban on assault weapons and sale of high-capacity magazines, abortions, and same-sex marriage.
