Apple rushes to fix FaceTime bug that let users eavesdrop on others

The bug, which allows callers to see and hear you before you've answered a Group FaceTime call, has forced Apple to disable the feature this week. While it's ringing, swipe up from the bottom of the device's display and tap Add Person, then add your own number in the Add Person screen.

For those who are rightfully concerned about this bug, my suggestion is that you disable FaceTime immediately until Apple releases a patch. It has disable Group FaceTime in the meantime so that it can not be used.

In the meantime, Apple has apparently disabled the Group Facetime feature entirely, preferring to inflict a service outage than to leave the exploitable privacy hole gaping open. Both iPhones must be running iOS 12.1 or later, or macOS 10.14 Mojave.

Only earlier this month during CES 2019, Apple produced adverts touting its user privacy strengths, while it was only yesterday that CEO Tim Cook talked up "action and reform for vital privacy protections".

According to the report, the bud lets people call anyone on FaceTime and listen to the audio coming from the person they're calling even if the person has not accepted or rejected the call.

Speaking to BuzzFeed, Apple said that it is "aware of this issue and we have identified a fix that will be released in a software update later this week". Hitting the volume rocker also showed video as reported.

He said: "The FaceTime bug is an egregious breach of privacy that puts New Yorkers at risk".

The issue comes at a critical juncture for Apple, which has been beset by slowing iPhone sales.

Alternatively on an iPhone or iPad select "Settings", then "FaceTime" after which you can turn off the green toggle at the top of the screen.
