Amazon might be reconsidering its second headquarters in NY

The shares initially dipped when the Washington Post report was posted Friday but then quickly gained back some of the loss.

Amazon has vowed to work with local officials to bring its campus to NY.

The company has held internal meetings to assess the situation in NY, where elected officials, labor leaders, and community activists are mounting a resistance to the project, two anonymous sources told The Post. It cited two unnamed people familiar with the retailer's thinking.

"We were invited to come to NY, and we want to invest in a community that wants us", he said. New York - Long Island City, specifically - was selected as a co-winner, along with land in Northern Virginia, in November.

For those involved in luring the company to NY, last year's designation of a relatively prosperous strip of Long Island City as an opportunity zone had become a headache.

Amazon may be getting cold feet and be ready to backpedal out of its plan to build a new campus in New York City.

But some residents in the rapidly transforming Long Island City neighborhood across the East River from mid town Manhattan's skyscrapers have loudly opposed Amazon's plan. They say the influx could push out existing residents and add to congestion on the already overcrowded subway.

Chicago and IL officials reached out to Amazon on Friday in a renewed effort to win a 25,000-job campus that would serve as part of the tech behemoth's second headquarters.

"I would be happy not to have them", said Terri Gloyd, the co-owner of the LIC Corner Cafe. You'd think they might have learned their lesson from what happened with IBM.

Online retail giant Amazon is reconsidering its plans to open a headquarters in Queens due to opposition from local lawmakers, according to a new report.

City council speaker Corey Johnson told local radio he is looking at subsidies for Amazon and that the plan is not yet final.

The two have been at the forefront of the Amazon opposition, and most recently, Sen.

Meanwhile, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democratic representative from NY who has been one of the most vocal critics of Amazon, saw the news of a potential withdrawal as a victory. Back in November, Ocasio-Cortez slammed the project as one benefiting a large outside corporation over local NY residents.

While Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio celebrated the news that Amazon would develop HQ2 in New York City, other New York politicians have been less welcoming.

Cuomo slammed the possibility that Amazon would pull out, blaming "political opposition".

"No one knows for sure if (the article) is true, and Amazon has been pretty tight-lipped on if they have wandering eyes", the source said.

The split second headquarters, which Amazon called HQ2, attracted 238 proposals from across North America in a year-long bidding war that garnered widespread publicity for the company. A smaller project in Nashville, Tennessee, is expected to create 5,000 new jobs.

In a statement, Gimenez said he is ready to start things up again whenever Amazon is. The company said it will receive performance-based incentives of $1.525 billion from the state of NY, including an average $48,000 for each job it creates.

What appears to have happened here is that Amazon paid more attention to the incentives offered by NY than in making sure that the neighborhood they planned to occupy was a proper fit.
