VA Delegate Pauses On Fairfax Impeachment, For Now

The controversy over the three officials was touched off 10 days ago with the disclosure from a conservative web site that the yearbook page of the now 59-year-old Northam showed a picture of two men, one in blackface and the other in a white hooded costume synonymous with the Ku Klux Klan hate group. "There's no better person to do that than a doctor".

Democratic Del. Patrick Hope said he wants to introduce articles of impeachment Monday against Fairfax, who is black.

In the unlikely event all three men were to step down, the governorship would pass to the Republican speaker of the state house, which would be a stunning reversal in a state where Democrats have been gaining power in the last few election cycles.

"When I was confronted with the images yesterday I was appalled that they appeared on my page", Northam said during a press conference on February 2, "but I believe then and now, that I am not either of the people in that photo".

At that point Gayle King, who had started things off by simply asking Northam where he wanted to begin, interrupted him to say, "Also known as slavery".

Also Saturday, Northam made his first official public appearance since he denied being in the photo, attending the funeral for a state trooper killed in a shootout.

Meanwhile, after ignoring calls for his own resignation, Northam is declining to weigh in on whether Fairfax or Herring should step down.

Another possibility: Fairfax simply hangs on as he disputes the allegations.

Fairfax also addressed Watson's claim in his statement, saying: "Regarding Ms. Watson, I knew Ms. Watson in college both before and after the encounter, and she never said to me that our interaction was not consensual or caused her any discomfort".

Her call, however, quickly evoked a barrage of negative responses online, with people criticising both her and the Democratic Party in general.

"And if these accusations are determined to be true, I don't think he's going to have any other option but to resign", Northam said.

Asked Sunday for his opinion on his subordinates, Northam said in the CBS interview that it's up to Fairfax and Herring to decide whether they want to remain in office.

A statement released by Watson's attorneys said both she and "at least two witnesses whom Ms. Watson told of the assault the day after Fairfax raped her" are prepared to testify about her allegation.

With Northam and Fairfax running out their political life spans, the party's left with Mark Herring, the state attorney general.

Northam said the "first indentured servants from Africa" arrived in what is now Virginia in 1619.

Once again, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam caused a nationwide facepalm with race-related comments.

"Yes", Northam replied, continuing, "And while we have made a lot of progress in Virginia-slavery has ended".

Twitter, however, wasn't impressed by Northam's progress so far.

If Fairfax were to leave, it's unclear who could replace him.

Northam said he has had painful conversations this week with black lawmakers - who continue to call publicly for him to resign - about the issue of blackface, and why it was wrong for him to darken his face to portray Michael Jackson in a San Antonio dance contest in 1984, as he has admitted doing.
