United States jury convicts Mexican drug lord El Chapo

Jurors have reached a verdict in the case of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán, the Mexican druglord accused of carrying out a sprawling criminal enterprise as chief of the Sinaloa cartel.

Joaqin Guzman, the notorious Mexican drug cartel boss known under nickname "El Chapo" is to face life in jail after a USA court found him guilty on all charges in a high-profile narcotics trial.

He faces up to life in prison, and his sentencing date is June 25.

El Chapo escaped from Mexican prisons twice, but was recaptured in 2016, and extradited to the USA in January 2017.

Federal court marshals whisked Guzman out of the courtroom immediately after the judge read the guilty verdict.

Guzman leaned back in his chair Tuesday to catch the eye of his wife, who gave him a subtle thumbs-up, when the jury was discharged from a federal courthouse in Brooklyn.

After he was convicted, the drug lord waved at his wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro, a former beauty queen, CNN reported.

They were are asked to make 53 decisions about whether prosecutors have proven various elements of the 10-count indictment against Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

The most detailed evidence against Guzman came from more than a dozen former associates who struck deals to cooperate with U.S. prosecutors.

Accused Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is seen with a handgun on display during a testimony by Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) agent Victor Vazquez (not shown) in this courtroom sketch in Brooklyn federal court in New York City on January 17, 2019. His lawyers say Guzman is not a criminal mastermind but just a fall guy for the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada.

Though other high-ranking cartel figures had been extradited previously, Guzman was the first to go to trial instead of pleading guilty.

Estimates of how much money Guzman made from drugs vary.

He was seized again in 2014, but pulled off his best known escape the following year when he disappeared into a tunnel dug into his cell in a maximum security prison.

Guzmán, once listed on Forbes' Billionaires List, has always been a slippery and near-mythical figure. A spokesman for the ex-president has denied the claim. The same day, he grinned broadly at audience member Alejandro Edda, the Mexican actor who plays Guzman in the Netflix drama "Narcos".

The drug lord, 61, faced charges of running a large-scale drug operation as the head of the Sinaloa drug cartel.

Despite his ties to government officials, Guzman often lived on the run.
