US authorities arrest Coast Guard for planning mass shooting attack

A self-professed white nationalist who is also a lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard planned to "murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country", federal prosecutors said.

Prosecutors say a United States Coast Guard lieutenant meant to kill innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country.

In a June 2017 draft email that was submitted to the court, Hasson wrote that he was "dreaming of a way to kill nearly every last person on the earth".

A spreadsheet of potential targets compiled by Hasson included Democratic House speaker Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer, Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other Democrats in the House and Senate.

Christopher Paul Hasson, 49, of Silver Spring, Maryland, is alleged to be a white supremacist who had a hit list that included prominent Democratic politicians as well as several journalists from CNN and MSNBC.

Hasson's internet history included searches such as: "Where in D.C.do Congress live?" and "Best place in D.C.to see Congress people", according to the court documents.

Hasson is being held on drug charges and for unlawfully possessing firearms and ammunition.

Lt. Hasson is also said to have showed a deep devotion to the writings of Anders Breivik, a Norwegian terrorist whose two attacks led to the death of 77 people.

"The defendant is a domestic terrorist bent on committing acts unsafe to human life", prosecutors said in new court filing.

Hur noted a search of his computers found an email draft from two years ago in which he dreamed about "a way to kill nearly every last person on the earth". But the government called those charges the "proverbial tip of the iceberg", and subsequently filed the motion on Tuesday asking the court to detain Hasson, who has a detention hearing on February 21. They say Hasson's attack preparations resembled Breivik's.

The email details possible biological weapons attacks with Spanish flu, botulism and anthrax, which would then be followed by an attack on the food supply, according to the court documents.

One of the things Breivik did to carry out his attack was take human growth hormones, something Hasson made a decision to adopt.

Hasson has been working at the US Coast Guard headquarters in Washington since 2016, according to court documents filed by prosecutors.

The lieutenant was stationed in Washington and now has been arrested on drug and gun possession charges, the report said. Officials with the USA attorney's office in Maryland outlined in court documents Hasson's alleged plans to spark chaos and destruction, describing a man obsessed with neo-fascist and neo-Nazi views.

A list Hasson compiled in January, federal prosecutors said, included names presumed to be the following Democratic lawmakers: Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer of NY, and Sens. "Get leadership within the community, sheriff, city manager, mayor, lawyer?" he wrote, according to court documents.

"The manifesto provides an incredibly detailed account of Breivik's planning and preparation prior to the attacks and was meant to serve as a blueprint for future single cell or "Lone Wolf" terrorist operations", the court filings said. He also had ordered thousands of Tramadol pills, a painkiller, since 2016, the government said. Scott McBride confirmed that Hasson worked in the Coast Guard acquisition directorate and released a statement regarding the investigation.
