Venezuela to deport USA journalists who were detained after interviewing Nicolas Maduro

Univision anchor Jorge Ramos was detained by Venezuelan authorities on Monday after an interview with President Nicolas Maduro reportedly stormed out of what appeared to be a tough interview.

The CNN host asked him why he stopped short of calling Maduro a dictator in an interview with Univision's Jorge Ramos last week.

Venezuelan officials confiscated his and his crew's cellphones, equipment and the material of the interview, according to Ramos.

Coronell tweeted that he had spokmen with Ramos, who told him that he and his team had been freed.

As Maduro's PR drive to "rehabilitate" his image continues by offering interviews to selected media outlets like the BBC or US network ABC, he insists on his main talking point of late: accusing the Trump administration of creating a crisis to justify an intervention in Venezuela.

Veneuzela on Tuesday deported a celebrated U.S. television anchor from the country, after his interview with President Nicolas Maduro turned sour and he was briefly detained for asking unpalatable questions.

"He tried to block the video with his hand, and he stood up and walked away", Ramos told Univision via phone from his hotel.

Ramos offered a first-hand account of what happened, including that he showed Maduro a video he personally took the day earlier of young men eating from a garbage truck.

The U.S. and other nations have demanded Maduro step down and have recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as Venezuela's rightful leader.

Maduro and his government have been under increasing worldwide pressure amid protests fueled by hyperinflation, power cuts and food and medicine shortages. At least seven foreign journalists who flew in to cover the turmoil were briefly detained in January.

Kimberly Breier, assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere Affairs, confirmed the reports on Twitter, saying the team had been "held against their will" at Maduro's presidential palace.
