GOP reps refer Michael Cohen to DOJ for alleged perjury during hearing

Alternately contrite and pugnacious, Cohen - who at various times has been the personal attorney for President Donald Trump, deputy finance chair of the Republican National Committee, an executive with the Trump Organization and a wheeler-dealer who held millions of dollars' worth of New York City taxi medallions, and is soon to be an inmate in federal prison after pleading guilty to lying to Congress - described a way of doing business at the Trump Organization that many likened to a mob operation.

I found Michael Cohen's testimony to the House Oversight Committee troubling and laughable and distasteful.

Democrat Adam Schiff, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said Cohen would return for further questioning next Wednesday to give lawmakers another chance to follow up on allegations of wrongdoing that Cohen leveled at his former boss this week.

Cohen completed a third day of testimony on Capitol Hill Thursday, one day after publicly branding his former boss a racist and a con man who lied about business dealings in Russian Federation and directed him to hide extramarital relationships.

Republican lawmakers, however, attacked Cohen as an unreliable witness, citing his earlier false testimony, and accused him of trying to cash in on his work for Trump with book and film deals.

This could include US President Donald Trump's son, Donald Jr, as well as former Trump CFO Allen Weissleberg.

ProPublica and WNYC have reported on numerous subjects Cohen touched on in his testimony.

"It may not be surprising that two pro-Trump Committee members. known now have made a baseless criminal referral", Davis said.

Also, Cohen has a lot of trouble believing that Trump was unaware of Trump Jr.'s infamous meeting with Russian agents since Jr. sought his dad's approval on everything; he even remembers a moment when Trump and Trump Jr. discussed in whispers an upcoming meeting that would fit with the timeline of the Russian meeting. "They could have made it two days later or next week", he said.

Weisselberg has served the Trump family for more than 40 years.

"He said there was no collusion and I was a little impressed by that, frankly, he only went about 95 per cent instead of 100 per cent". The House Intelligence Committee plans to bring Weisselberg in to testify.

President Trump holds a news conference after his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Hanoi, Vietnam on February 28.

President Trump slammed Michael Cohen in a series of tweets Friday, claiming that his former fixer wrote him a "love letter" in the form of a book pitch - and demanding that Congress examine the proposal. According to Cohen, Trump made it clear what narrative he hoped the country would hear and that that's what he wanted to hear from Cohen; apparently this approach is a common tactic in mobster settings to avoid direct instructions.

Schiff said the committee went through several documents with Cohen - and have more documents to ask him about.

Cohen also pleaded guilty to five counts of tax evasion, one count of making false statements to a financial institution, one count of willfully causing an unlawful corporate contribution and one count of making an excessive campaign contribution, all charges arising out of the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election.

Cohen answered affirmatively before divulging another new detail: that federal prosecutors are looking to answer that very question.

"There's one thing that I think should not be missed that came out of the hearing. and that is how [Trump] directed payments into the foundation to keep from paying taxes", Ms Waters said.

Cohen testified on Wednesday, calling Trump a "conman" who knew in advance about the release of stolen emails aimed at hurting his Democratic rival in the 2016 election campaign.

"I wouldn't use the world "colluding", Cohen testified.
