Charles Leclerc: Ferrari are not running 'flat out' yet

"I think between us two the differences are not massive".

The Italian team did not specify what problem led to Vettel's crash in the morning session of the second of four days of testing.

Leclerc eventually worked his way down to a 1:16.231 on the fastest C5 tyres - a lap within one tenth of last year's record Spanish GP pole time.

Valtteri Bottas took over the Mercedes during the afternoon, with world champion Lewis Hamilton having earlier recovered from a spin to briefly set a fastest lap before completing 85 circuits.

"I think they are really fast, they showed some good pace", he said.

However, he remained upbeat with the way that the test had gone for Ferrari as a whole. There's still some margin, a bit obviously in myself.

Gasly, meanwhile, went into a spin at Turn 9, sending him off the track and into the barriers.

"It's nice to top the time sheet, but it doesn't mean anything; what matters is that, lap after lap, I am getting more and more dialled in to this auto".

A long-run comparison between Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull looked possible in the afternoon as all three teams attempted a race simulation after lunch.

While Red Bull have impressed with their new Honda engine, Gasly said Ferrari were still ahead. "I wasn't in control any more and went more or less straight into the barrier".

"I made a mistake in Turn 9 and basically lost the auto. But what is important is that Max [Verstappen] is back in the auto and we focus on the positives".

Despite the interruption, Mercedes and Ferrari completed their race sims, with the Ferrari averaging lap times 0.25s faster than Mercedes over the course of 66 laps.

"This is just testing and we are just doing more qualifying-based runs so we can see what you can do with the auto".

Further down the grid, a flurry of qualifying style laps by the midfield teams saw a number of competitive times split by less than a second.

Bottas did 96 laps after lunch but his best effort of 1:18.862 was still the slowest time of the day.
