Kim opens door to United States presence in Pyongyang at nuke talks

Kim and Trump resumed their summit on Thursday morning local time - as the USA president predicted a "fantastic success" but the North Korean dictator said it was "too early" to say they would reach a deal.

Trump said he and Kim had discussed dismantling North Korea's main nuclear facility at Yongbyon, which Kim was willing to do, but he had wanted sanctions relief.

"If I'm not willing to do that, I wouldn't be here right now", Kim said in response to a question from reporters in Hanoi, Vietnam.

They responded to questions from reporters at about 11 a.m. local time.

President Donald Trump said he walked out of his 2nd summit with Kim Jong Un after the 2 leaders could not agree on a deal to relieve NKorea of U.S. sanctions in exchange for Pyongyang giving up much of its nuclear weapons program.

Possible outcomes could include a peace declaration for the Korean War that the North could use to eventually push for the reduction of US troops in South Korea, or sanctions relief that could allow Pyongyang to pursue lucrative economic projects with the South.

Some of Trump's previous overseas trips have also been marred by developments at home, including special counsel Robert Mueller's indictments last July of Russian intelligence officers who interfered on Trump's behalf in the 2016 election, charges that were filed days before the president and Russia's Vladimir Putin met in Helsinki.

The second Kim-Trump summit came about eight months after the first in Singapore in June a year ago.

Reports since have suggested North Korea has dismantled some nuclear test sites, but some signs point to other sites still being used.

The two men who once traded personal insults and threats of destruction were holding their second meeting in eight months, with analysts stressing it needs to produce more concrete progress than their initial historic get-together in Singapore.

Mr Trump earlier said there was "no rush" to reach a deal.

But reports from the negotiations and the ambience of the first meeting on Thursday suggested such a major breakthroughs remained elusive as they went into their final session of talks and a working lunch, which was due to be followed by the signing of a joint statement. "What's important is that we do the right deal". "I just want to say I have great respect for Chairman Kim, and I have great respect for his country, and I believe that it will be something economically that will be nearly hard to compete with for many countries".

The summit was "pageantry for Trump and brings Kim more credibility on the world stage as a responsible, rational actor", the Stimson Center's David Kim told AFP.

The U.S. side said "that wouldn't work", he said, adding that North Korea was unwilling to completely freeze its weapons programs.

- And could the meeting yield far more concrete results than the leaders' first summit, a meeting in Singapore less than a year ago?

But he insisted that relations with Kim remained warm, stressed that progress had been made and said he was still hopeful of eventually reaching a deal to denuclearize North Korea.

Moreover, President Moon has been appealing to the worldwide community for easing sanctions on Pyongyang, while the global community has been seeking to force the communist country to abandon its nuclear programs by imposing economic sanctions. Speaking through an interpreter, Kim said he is "confident of achieving the great results that everyone will welcome".

The North Korean leader said they would "have a very interesting dialogue" and hoped the Hanoi summit delivers "an outcome welcome by everyone".

The White House has given no indication of what the signing ceremony might involve, although the two sides' discussions have included the possibility of a political statement to declare the 1950-53 Korean War over, which some critics see as premature.
