Tesla's new V3 Supercharger can add 75 miles in 5 minutes

Supercharger stations with V3 hardware are created to enable any owner to charge at the full power their battery can take - no more splitting power with another vehicle connected to your cabinet.

The good news for Tesla owners doesn't end there, though.

Tesla is also flexing its software muscles with the new V3 Supercharger standard with a creative feature called "On Route Battery Warmup". When drivers navigate to a Supercharger, the vehicle will begin to warm the battery to an optimal level, thus resulting in less time spent charging.

Tesla, which proclaims to build world's largest grid-connected batteries, has developed new technology to increase the speed of the auto charging and with V3 Supercharger stations, Tesla customers, particularly owning Model 3-series will now be able to power up their cars at the peak rates of up to 250kW, meaning just 5 minutes of charging will be enough for the Model 3 Long Range to drive 75 miles (or 120.7 KMs).

Tesla says that, on average, V3 Supercharging will halve the amount of time its customers spend charging to about 15 minutes.

The company says with just 5 minutes of charging, you can get up to 75 miles, or 120 kilometres. 145 kW is the charging rate of a current shared pair of Tesla's Superchargers, so the fix seems to be a simple software unlocking of the max speed of a single vehicle charging on a shared pair.

Tesla has released the details of its V3 Supercharging network, the third generation of the company's charging infrastructure that promises rates up to 1000 miles per hour. That's a meaningful improvement that will help relieve the increasing tension and lines at Superchargers around the world.

Your Tesla when charging at a V3 Supercharger will indicate you're at a "high-usage Supercharger station" and note only a max battery charge of 80% is available.

However, it will take a while for V3 to come online: The first V3 Supercharging site is a beta-test location in the Bay Area, available for Tesla's Early Access customers, and the first non-beta location will break ground next month.
