The Chiefs reportedly secured their top target in safety Tyrann Mathieu.

There may not be a player New Orleans Saints fans want their team to sign more than Houston Texans safety Tyrann Mathieu.

After early reports that Mathieu had turned down a $9.5 million per year offer to stay with the Houston Texans and would explore the National Football League free agency market, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Monday night that the Chiefs will sign the star-caliber safety.

After opening day of the NFL's legal tampering period, none of those things turned out to either matter enough or be true. Following the end of the 2018 season, Mathieu claimed that it was extremely important that he remain in Houston as a member of the Texans.

His best season as a pro came during the 2015 season with the Arizona Cardinals when he was named an All-Pro, and went to the Pro Bowl after creating six turnovers, five were interceptions.

In Kansas City, the versatile Mathieu should pair up with Eric Berry to form an impact safety tandem.

Mathieu, who racked up 70 tackles, three sacks and two interceptions in his lone season with Houston, gives the Chiefs an elite defender in the middle of the field - something the team lacked in the 2018 season. After Landon Collins got a deal that upended the safety market, bidding for Mathieu took off and the Chiefs eventually emerged victorious, though the final offers were similar. He hit the open market and signed a one-year deal with the Texans.
