5 children, 4 others dead in Brazil school shooting

Police told Globo TV that another shooting took place nearby shortly before the killings at the school, which about 1,000 students attend, but it was not yet clear if the two incidents were related.

"The teenagers were brutally murdered", São Paulo state governor João Doria said after visiting the school.

It was a horrifying scenes in Sao Paulo, Brazil and the adult who was killed was the principal of the Raul Brasil public Grade school.

Sao Paulo state authorities say eight people have been killed in a school shooting in Brazil, including two student shooters.

Latin America's most populous nation has the largest number of annual homicides in the world, but school shootings are rare.

The attackers were trying to force their way inside a room at the back of the school where many students were hiding when police arrived.

The last major school shooting was in 2011, when 12 children were shot dead by a former pupil in Rio de Janeiro.

"Then a lot of kids started running out, all screaming", he said.

"Two injured people died after being taken to hospital".

Gun laws have been extremely strict in Brazil since 2003 when former leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva signed measures that prevented ordinary citizens from carrying guns. "We thought it was the shooters coming to get us, but it was the police", she said.

At least nine people were killed at a Brazilian elementary school where two young men were seen entering the building and firing weapons early on Wednesday, according to Sao Paulo police.

The wounded student who took shelter in her house could not speak.

Speaking a few blocks from the public school in Suzano, Mr Doria said: "The school is on lockdown". "It is the saddest thing I have seen in my life".
