Bianca Andreescu beats Angelique Kerber to win Paribas Open

Canadian Milos Raonic made sure Miomir Kecmanovic s luck ran out on Thursday, beating the 19-year-old Serbian 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals of the ATP Indian Wells Masters. The fifth-seeded team of Dabrowski and Yifan Xu of China lost 6-2, 7-6 (5) to Elise Mertens of Belgium and Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus.

Andreescu hopes that belief will next lift her past three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber, another player she has yet to face in her career. Kerber is highly experienced and has won 12 WTA titles in the past so she will be very confident as she enters this match. "To play against Venus, it's always tough. She played so great in the past few weeks", the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) quoted Kerber as saying.

"I just started playing these high-level events a year ago, and I think I'm gaining more and more experience after every match", Andreescu continued. "I was trying to play concentrated, and going for it when I had the chance", Kerber said.

"I just want to enjoy this moment, because I don't want to take anything for granted", said Andreescu.

Bencic had been in impeccable form since the Fed Cup, with the 23rd seed unbeaten since losing to Veronika Kudermetova at the St Petersburg Open in January. The 22-year-old Swiss player missed five months in 2017 after wrist surgery.

After dropping the first set she came back strong in the second, winning the first four games as she forced a decisive third set, although not before Bencic saved four set points. Momentum swung firmly in Kerber's favour during the tie-break when Williams committed six unforced errors, including a backhand into the net that handed the German the set.

"That's what I've been doing throughout many years and now this moment has become a reality so it's really, really insane".

"I'm really looking forward to a really tough battle". So far this year, Andreescu has more wins than any woman on tour - 27 after Friday night - and before this tournament she had only two career wins over top-20 opponents. When Andreescu was broken by Kerber early in the deciding set it seemed her remarkable week looked set to end in disappointment.

"It's incredible, really", Andreescu said of her achievement. Kerber showed her class as a returner during the win as she won 69% of her receiving points which allowed her to break Bencic's serve on 7 occasions. Even so, she had Pliskova under pressure in a marathon fourth game, but could not convert four break chances. "Another goal of mine was to make history, and I just did".
