Brexit Latest: Third time lucky for Theresa May's deal?

Speaker John Bercow said Monday that centuries-old parliamentary rules prevent a motion being brought back repeatedly for votes in the same session of Parliament.

The pound rose by 0.2% in early trading local time, keeping its head above water at the $1.32 level, where the currency trade seems to stabilise in between volatile swings.

Back in October, she even suggested a no deal Brexit was a better option than Mrs May's proposals for the future relationship of the United Kingdom and EU.

"If the Government wishes to bring forward a new proposition that is neither the same nor substantially the same as that disposed of by the House on March 12, this would be entirely in order", said Mr Bercow.

"The EU's interests will be put before anything else", said the official, who isn't authorized to speak publicly in line with the presidency's customary practices.

May has indicated that she will seek an extension to that deadline when European Union leaders meet in Brussels on Thursday and Friday.

At home, a new vote on UK Brexit deal has been blocked by the Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow. "Will the United Kingdom request an extension because it wants a bit more time to rework the political declaration?"

France's minister for European affairs, Nathalie Loiseau, has named her cat "Brexit" because when she opens the door he "stays put".

"What the government can not legitimately do is resubmit to the House the same proposition - or substantially the same proposition - as that of last week, which was rejected by 149 votes", Bercow said in an unannounced statement on Monday.

"Extending the uncertainty without a clear plan would add to the economic cost for our businesses, but could also incur a political cost for the EU".

The head of the 2016 referendum campaign to leave the EU, Matthew Elliott, said he expected MPs to "see sense" and pass May's deal by March 29.

The EU is intensely frustrated with Britain's political paralysis, and say they will only grant an extension if United Kingdom politicians break their deadlock and decide what kind of Brexit they want. We are waiting for a decision, what they want and what they...

Commons leader Andrea Leadsom is said to have criticised her cabinet colleagues, saying it is now a "Remain cabinet", not a "Brexit Cabinet", Kuenssberg said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she will fight for an "orderly Brexit" until "the very last hour".

May, however, is likely to ask for a long extension to the Brexit process.

But here is the important point about this delay that this minister was desperate for me to know: "The nine months would be a maximum; if we ratified the Withdrawal Agreement at any point before the end of nine months, we could leave the European Union much sooner".

But Mr Barclay said: "We need to look at that because if you look at other things that the Speaker has said".

It could also mean Britain crashing out of the bloc next week without a deal, even though Parliament has voted to rule out that option.

Mrs Merkel said that current events were in a "state of flux", adding that European Union leaders will try to react to whatever the United Kingdom proposes.

Solicitor General for England and Wales Robert Buckland told the BBC that "we're in a major constitutional crisis" and that Bercow's ruling has "given us a lot to think about".
