Europe offers Britain more time to resolve Brexit plan

Anti Brexit protesters dressed as Theresa May and Angela Merkel outside the EU Commission in Brussels ahead of the European Leaders' summit at which Prime Minister Theresa May will be asking for an extension to Brexit.

They called on May to acknowledge "the reckless damage" leaving with no deal would cause and to secure an extension of the 29 March Brexit deadline.

A further extension would require Britain to take part in European Parliament elections in May, despite having voted to leave the bloc three years ago. April 12 would be the deadline for the United Kingdom to register its intention to take part in the elections. "If it has not chose to do so by then the option of a long extension will immediately become impossible".

Mrs May is expected to table secondary legislation which needs to go though Parliament by Friday in order to remove the date of 29 March from Brexit legislation.

"If Parliament is not willing to vote for the deal that we already have then we need to come up with something new in the next fortnight, and I really don't think that is going to happen", said Mr Wood, who has reluctantly backed the Prime Minister's deal despite concerns over the Irish backstop.

"So I think now it's nearly like a dam bursting, because we've been held back in a sense - it's nearly like last chance salon now".

If she succeeds, the European Union leaders agreed to extend the Article 50 withdrawal process until May 22 to enable the Government to get the necessary legislation through Parliament.

"In the light of the consultations that I have conducted over the past days I believe that a short extension will be possible but to be conditional on a positive vote on the withdrawal agreement in the House of Commons", Tusk said in a statement on Wednesday.

"What the decision underlines is the importance of the House of Commons passing a Brexit deal next week so that we can bring an end to the uncertainty and leave in a smooth and orderly manner", May said.

"I will help you get it over the line to prevent a disastrous no deal exit. I hope we can all agree we are now at the moment of decision".

But if her withdrawal agreement fails for a third time, the European Union will push back the leave date from March 29 to April 12 to give the embattled Prime Minister more time.

If Parliament rejects her proposal once again, "at this point we would either leave with no deal, or put forward an alternative plan", she said, according to the New York Times.

He said the proposed June 30th date "has merits" but also creates a "series of questions of legal and political nature".

Friday 22 March: The EU Council summit wraps up, leaving Mrs May with an extension until 22 May if her deal passes.
