Jordan Peele's 'Us' stuns with $70 million opening weekend

Having grossed over US$87 million last week, the U.S. blockbuster is dominating the global box office, followed closely by the Jordan Peele thriller "Us" which generated US$86.9 million.

Additionally, "Us" has also become the biggest debut for an R-rated original title ahead of 2012's "Ted", which opened to $54.4 million, while coming in second as the biggest debut of the year behind "Captain Marvel".

The sheer openness when it comes to he interpretations is perhaps best summed up when Red (the doppelganger of Lupita Nyong'o's Adelaide) answers her double's cries to know who or what her family are with the simple response: "We're Americans".

Following closely at its heels is the latest film from Oscar-winning director Jordan Peele.

While Us catered to moviegoers looking for a good fright, Captain Marvel was doing some terrifying business of its own during the superhero blockbuster's third weekend of release. With this number, it topped all over the films out this weekend, naturally, but also broke box office records for horror films and live-action films in general, almost matching Avatar's $77 million opening weekend in 2009. The tally beat analysts' estimates of US$51 million to US$54 million - and ranked the film among the highest-openings ever for a horror feature. Brie Larson's Carol Danvers remains a force at the box office, crossing $900 million in ticket sales globally. Paramount Pictures' animated adventure Wonder Park landed in third place, earning US$9 million for a North American bounty of US$29 million. That's a strong result, considering it cost a modest $7 million to produce. The conclusion to the "Dragon" trilogy pocketed $6.5 million in its fifth weekend in theaters, bringing its domestic total to $145 million.
