‘The View’ unloads on decision to drop all charges against Jussie Smollett

Smollett pleaded not guilty in a March 14 arraignment on a 16-count indictment of lying to police about the incident in which, he said, he was attacked by two masked men who made homophobic and racist comments against him.

The 36-year-old, one of the main cast members on Fox musical drama "Empire" alongside Taraji P. Henson, was accused of masterminding a hoax attack in downtown Chicago to gain publicity and secure a bigger paycheck.

Prosecutors still insist Jussie Smollett faked a racist, anti-gay attack on himself in the hopes that the attention would advance his acting career.

Chicago's Fraternal Order of Police is taking aggressive action against the Cook County State's Attorney's office over their decision to drop all charges against "Empire" star Jussie Smollett in return for 16 hours of community service and a forfeited $10,000 court bond.

"To be honest with you, Wolf, I'm completely confused".

Tuesday evening, just hours after learning of the State's Attorney's decision, the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) issued a second letter to the United States Attorney's office in Chicago, calling for a Federal investigation into Kim Foxx's office, and suggesting that something odd is happening among Chicago's prosecutors.

With little explanation, authorities abandoned the criminal case after only five weeks.

Chicago's mayor Rahm Emanuel spoke out on "Good Morning America" Wednesday morning, saying, "He's an actor, a person of influence".

"This is not a new or unusual practice". "I'm waiting, along with everyone else in Chicago, for a fuller understanding of why they took this step".

The Chicago Police Department released what it said were all its records from the case on Wednesday, totaling 61 pages, with some names and other personal details redacted. "We need people that stand by us".

Smollett's attorney, Tina Glandian of Geragos & Geragos, pushed back, telling "GMA" of the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, "I think if they believed the charges, they never would have dismissed the case". "And you have to remember that Mr.Smollett claimed that there was a letter, a threatening letter sent to him".

Gloria Schmidt, the attorney for the brothers, Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo, said they were "fully prepared" to testify in Smollett's case. "I stand behind the detective's investigation".

She continued, "We should absolutely believe victims".

"The police department is saying 'we had enough evidence, ' the prosecution is saying 'he's not exonerated, we believed in our case, ' and Jussie's saying 'I did nothing wrong I told the truth".

The initial news of the attack had prompted widespread sympathy for Smollett and outrage over the nature of the alleged crime.

She said Smollett is a crime victim and "just wants his life back".

Smollett said he wanted to move on with his life and continue to fight for justice, equality and marginalized people.
